Baseball: Maloney, UMass Lowell Downs Stonehill, 3-1, to Clinch Playoff Spot
River Hawks to play Wednesday in first round of NE-10 tournament

LOWELL, Mass. (May 5, 2008) – Jeffrey Maloney (Haverhill, Mass.) struck worked 7.2 innings to win his fifth game of the year as UMass Lowell defeated Stonehill, 3-1, in the second game of a Northeast-10 baseball doubleheader Monday afternoon at LeLacheur Park.

The River Hawks clinch a playoff spot with the win and improve to 26-23 overall and 18-12 in the NE-10. The Skyhawks fell to 25-22 overall and 16-14 in the NE-10 with the loss.

Maloney struck out six and allowed just one run on five hits over the 7.2 innings on the mound. He allowed just one hit over the first five innings of the contest. Maloney improved to 5-3 on the season with the win.

Offensively the River Hawks scored all three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Anthony Santos (Chelmsford, Mass.) drove in Peter Wolstenholme (Fall River, Mass.), who singled to lead off the inning, for the first run of the game with a double to left field.

Three batters later Taylor von Kriegenbergh (Stoneham, Mass.) knocked in two more runs with a single to left field. Tim Keene (Berlin, N.H.), who drew a walk, and Santos scored on the two-run single.

Stonehill got on the scoreboard in the top of the eighth with a run on two hits. Scott Hackett (Bangor, Maine) led off the inning with a walk and scored three batters later on a double from Mitch Davis (Bow, N.H.).

Mat Lindenmayer (Penfield, N.Y.) took the loss for Stonehill to fall to 3-3 on the season. Lindenmayer surrendered three runs on six hits over eight innings of work. He struck out three and walked one.

Mark Sakelakos (Peabody, Mass.) earned his sixth save of the year working the final 1.1 innings. Sakelakos walked one and struck out one.

The River Hawks advance to the Northeast-10 tournament with the game two victory over the Skyhawks. They host Pace on Wednesday. Time for the game has yet to be announced.
