Baseball: White, UMass Lowell Defeats Saint Anselm, 5-3
White wins for third straight start, Wolstenholme has three hits and two RB

MANCHESTER, N.H. (April 18, 2008) – Dan White (Southboro, Mass.) struck out seven over eight innings and Peter Wolstenholme (Fall River, Mass.) had three hits and two RBI as UMass Lowell defeated Saint Anselm, 3-2, Friday afternoon in Northeast-10 baseball action at Sullivan Park.

The River Hawks have won seven straight and improve to 18-16 overall and 13-5 in the NE-10 with the win. The Hawks lost for the second straight game and fall to 12-21 overall and 8-13 in the NE-10.

White improve to 3-3 with the win scattering seven hits and allowing just one run, an unearned run, over eight innings of work. The sophomore right hander struck out seven and walked just one. White has pitched at least seven innings in each of his last three starts, all wins.

Wolstenholme, who delivered the game-winning hit in UML’s 2-1, 14-inning victory over Saint Rose Thursday night, led the way for UML going 3-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored. Wolstenholme singled in a pair in the seventh and scored one of UML’s two runs in the ninth.

Eric Baca (Franklin, N.H.) led Saint Anselm with three hits, while Adam Hussey (Danvers, Mass.) had two hits. Ben Gunn (Vineyard Haven, Mass.) had two RBI for the Hawks.

Gunn tripled in the game’s first run in the bottom of the third to give Saint Anselm a 1-0 lead.

Saint Anselm took a 1-0 with a single run in the bottom of the third. With Nick Moreau (Manchester, N.H.) on second base – following an error and a sacrifice bunt – Gunn tripled to right center field to put the Hawks on the board.

The River Hawks were held off the board until the seventh inning when they scored three runs on Nick Barese (Braintree, Mass.). Wolstenholme singled in two of the three runs, the other scoring on a ground out by Sean Burns (Colchester, Vt.).

UML added to its lead with two more runs in the top of the ninth. With one out Wolstenholme singled, then stole both second and third. Burns followed with a walk and a steal of second. Anthony Santos (Chelmsford, Mass.) plated both Wolstenholme and Burns with a double to left.

Gunn picked up his second RBI of the afternoon drawing a bases loaded walk that scored Evan Kelleher (Haverhill, Mass.). Nick Moreau (Manchester, N.H.) scored the Hawks’ second run of the ninth on a passed ball.

Barese surrendered three runs on five hits over seven innings for Saint Anselm, but took the loss to fall to 3-2. Barese fanned three and walked three.

Derek Anderson (Dracut, Mass.) worked the ninth for UML, allowing two runs, one earned, on two hits. He struck out two.

The River Hawks return to action Saturday afternoon when they travel to American International. Game time is set for 12:00 p.m. UML and AIC meet on Sunday at LeLacheur Park (1:00 p.m.). The Hawks are at Assumption Saturday afternoon for a doubleheader (12:00 p.m.).
