Tim Manton collects four hits and five RBI in the DH sweep
LOWELL, Mass. (April 2, 2008) – Tim Manton went 4-for-9 with five RBI as UMass Lowell swept Saint Anselm in a Northeast-10 baseball doubleheader Wednesday at LeLacheur Park. The River Hawks won game one, 9-5, and game two, 5-2.
UML has won five of its last six and improves to 8-13 overall and 5-2 in the Northeast-10. The Hawks have dropped six straight and fall to 5-13 overall and 1-6 in the NE-10.
Anthony Santos (Chelmsford, Mass.), along with Manton collected four hits in the twinbill. Santos also scored four runs and picked up two RBI. Tim Keene (Berlin, N.H.) was 2-for-9 with two RBI on the day. Manton had three hits and five RBI in game one.
Ryan Gargan (Byfield, Mass.) led the way for the Hawks going 3-for-6 with two runs scored and an RBI. Evan Kelleher (Haverhill, Mass.) and Matt Stone (West Roxbury, Mass.) each had two hits on the day.
In game one the Hawks opened the scoring in the contest on a two-run single by Ryan O’Rourke (Norwood, Mass.). His run-scoring hit scored Stone and Gargan.
The River Hawks responred with three runs in the third, and single runs in the fourth and seventh. Manton plated two with a single in the third and doubled in UML’s seventh inning run.
Saint Anselm plated two runs, both unearned runs on two River Hawk errors, in the seventh inning to tie the game, 5-5 after seven innings of play.
The game remained tied until the top of the tenth inning when the River Hawks sent eight men to the plate and scored four runs. Manton again delivered the big hit in the frame with a two-run single to center.
Matt Monico (Tewksbury, Mass.) got the game one victory, pitching 2.1 hitless innings of relief. James Barry (Chelmsford, Mass.) got the start and allowed five runs, three earned, on six hits in 6.2 innings.
Tim Ryan (Milton, Mass.) took the loss for Saint Anselm. He surrendered one run on two hits in two innings of work out of the bullpen. Nick Barese (Braintree, Mass.) made the start and allowed five runs on nine hits over seven innings of work.
The River Hawks used a solid pitching performance from freshman pitcher Kyle Davis (Rochester, N.H.) to earn the victory in game two and the doubleheader sweep. Davis allowed just three hits – two of which game in his final inning of work – and struck out nine. Both runs he surrendered were unearned.
Junior Tim Keene got the big hit in game two with a two-run triple to center as the River Hawks scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth. Luke Wallace (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) followed the Keene triple with a sacrifice fly.
Taylor von Kriegenbergh (Stoneham, Mass.) had an RBI double in the fifth.
The Hawks scored twice in the eighth on just one hit. The first run crossed the plate as a result of a UML error. And the second run scored on a wild pitch.
Andrew Long (Peabody, Mass.) took the loss for the Hawks. He surrendered five runs, four earned, on six hits and four walks in 4.2 innings. Long struck out four. Kyle Lavin (Shelton, Conn.) allowed just one run over 3.1 innings of relief.
Mark Sakelakos (Peabody, Mass.) worked a scoreless ninth to pick up his first save of the season for UML.
The River Hawks return to the field Thursday afternoon when they host Southern Connecticut. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m. at LeLacheur Park. The Hawks play Pace in a doubleheader Thursday afternoon (1:00 p.m.).
