Sean Burns has three runs and three RBI in win
LOWELL, Mass. (April 6, 2008) – Sean Burns (Colchester, Vt.) reached base four times, scored three runs and drove in three runs as UMass Lowell defeated Southern New Hampshire, 13-0, Sunday afternoon in Northeast-10 baseball action at LeLacheur Park. The Penmen were the home team in the game.
The River Hawks swept the weekend series and improve to 11-14 overall and 8-3 in the NE-10 with the win. The Penmen fall to 4-17 overall and 2-11 in league games with the loss.
Burns led the way offensively going 1-for-3 with three walks, three runs scored and three RBI. He reached base in each of his last four plate appearances.
Tim Manton (Swansea, Mass.) was 2-for-5 with three RBI and a run scored. Luke Wallace (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) went 4-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored.
The River Hawks opened the scoring with a single run in the third inning, but scored seven runs in the seventh to break the game open. UML plated another five runs in the ninth.
UML sent 11 men to the plate in the seventh, collected four hits, drew two bases on balls and were hit by two pitches. Manton delivered the big hit in the frame with a two-run double down the left field line. Taylor von Kriegenbergh had an RBI single in the seventh.
Burns and pinch-hitter Mark Sakelakos (Peabody, Mass.) each knocked in a pair in the ninth with back-to-back singles. Manton plated the River Hawks 13th run, his third RBI of the game, with a double to left, his second double of the game.
James Barry (Chelmsford, Mass.) got the start and win for the River Hawks on the mound. The senior right hander struck out four and allowed no runs on four hits over six innings.
Matt Monico (Tewksbury, Mass.) pitched two scoreless innings in relief. And Manton fanned two in a perfect ninth inning on the mound.
Ryan Quinn (Lebanon, Conn.) surrendered six runs, five earned, on four hits over 6.1 innings to take the loss for the Penmen. Quinn walked four and struck out three.
Ryan Thompson (Westford, Mass.) was the only SNHU player with multiple hits. He was 2-for-4 on the day.
UML recorded two shutouts in the weekend sweep of Southern New Hampshire and allowed just one run and 11 hits in the three games.
The River Hawks return to the field Tuesday night when they travel to Franklin Pierce (3:30 p.m.). UML hosts the Ravens on Thursday night at LeLacheur Park (7:00 p.m.).
