Baseball: UMass Lowell Downs Southern New Hampshire, 3-1, in Game Two to Sweep Doubleheader
Jeffery Maloney pitches seven innings, wins third game of year

LOWELL, Mass. (April 5, 2008) – Jeffery Maloney (Haverhill, Mass.) pitched seven innings of three-hit baseball as UMass Lowell defeated Southern New Hampshire, 3-1, in game two of a Northeast-10 baseball doubleheader at LeLacheur Park Saturday night.

The River Hawks have won seven of their last nine games and improve to 10-14 overall and 7-3 in the NE-10. The Penmen have dropped two straight and fall to 4-16 overall and 2-10 in conference.

Maloney allowed just one run on three hits over seven innings to record his team-leading third win of the season. He improved to 3-1 with the win. The junior right hander struck out five and walked three.

Offensively, Sean Burns (Colchester, Vt.) led the way with two hits and a run scored. Tim Keene (Berlin, N.H.), Taylor von Kriegenbergh (Stoneham, Mass.) and Graeme Clohsey (Derry, N.H.) each had an RBI in the victory.

Each team scored a run in the second inning off a fielder’s choice. Chris O’Neil (Chelmsford, Mass.) crossed the plate for the Penmen. The River Hawks run was scored by von Kriegenbergh, who reached on an error.

Clohosey gave UML the lead with an RBI single to centerfield in the fourth that scored sophomore Luke Wallace (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.).

Keene drove in the River Hawks’ third and final run of the night with a sacrifice fly that plated Burns in the fifth.

Bryant Gauthier (Lynn, Mass.) took the loss for the Penmen, allowing three runs, one earned, on four hits over four innings on the mound. He fanned three and walked three.

Derek Anderson (Dracut, Mass.) pitched a scoreless ninth to record his second save of the season for UML.

Burns went 4-for-8 with a double and a run scored in the doubleheader against Southern New Hampshire. River Hawk pitching surrendered just one run on seven hits in 18 innings on Saturday.

The River Hawks and Penmen conclude their weekend series Sunday afternoon at LeLacheur Park. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. The contest will be a home game for Southern New Hampshire.
