River Hawks Open Florida Trip Friday
YAPHANK, NY (Mar. 9, 2008) – Junior 2B Kyle Walker batted 8 for 11 with eight RBI and six runs as C.W. Post defeated UMass Lowell, 14-13 and 10-4 Sunday in a non-conference baseball twin bill at the Baseball Heaven complex.
With the losses, UML slipped to 0-6 as meets Molloy College Friday at 9:00 a.m. at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, FL. The Pioneers improved to 4-7.
In the opener, Walker belted a two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning as C.W. Post overcame a 9-2 deficit to prevail 14-13. The Pioneers erupted for 20 hits, including 13 over the final three innings.
Walker batted 5 for 6 with four runs and four RBI while sophomore SS Bryan Bonin went 4 for 6 with three runs and one RBI and senior DH Mike Sylvester 3 for 5 with four RBI.
Senior CF Tim Manton (Swansea, MA) batted 2 for 4 with three RBI and two runs to lead UML while sophomore 1B Taylor von Kriegenbergh (Stoneham, MA) went 2 for 5 with two RBI and a run. Sophomore RF Luke Wallace (Yorktown, NY) batted 1 for 2 with three runs and three walks.
Freshman P Bo Budkevics earned the win as he came into the ninth inning and struck out two and allowed a walk. Sophomore P Derek Anderson (Dracut, MA) took the loss as he hurled the final inning.
The River Hawks led 9-2 entering the bottom of the fifth inning, but the Pioneers inched closer with two runs in the fifth and one more in the sixth to cut the lead to 9-5.
After an RBI triple by sophomore 3B Peter Wolstenholme (Fall River, MA) in the seventh, CWP pulled two back in the bottom half, then took a 12-10 lead with five runs in the eighth. Sylvester highlighted the inning with a two-run double.
UML then went ahead 13-12 in the ninth when sophomore C Jared Notargiacomo (Newburyport, MA) smacked a three-run shot to centerfield, only to be spoiled by Walker’s two-run walk-off in the bottom half.
In the night cap, junior C Brian Anderson batted 3 for 5 with five RBI and two runs while Walker went 3 for 5 with four RBI and two runs to lead the Pioneers to the sweep. Mike Sylvester batted 3 for 4 with two runs while senior 1B Tim Sylvester hit 2 for 3 with two runs and two RBI to fuel the Pioneers.
Manton led the River Hawks, hitting 2 for 3 with one run while senior 2B Anthony Santos (Chelmsford, MA) went 2 for 4 with two RBI, and Wallace 2 for 4 with one RBI.
Sophomore P Dan White (Southboro, MA) took the loss, slipping to 0-2. White scattered eight hits, six runs (all earned) and two walks while striking out three over three innings.
Senior P Kevin Gerard improved to 1-0 as he allowed six hits, four runs (all earned) and a walk while striking out 10 over 7 1/3 innings.
The Pioneers scored two runs in the first inning and four in the second as Walker hit two-run doubles in each inning. UML cut the lead to 6-3 in the third behind a two-run single by Santos, but CWP added two more runs in the fourth to post an 8-3 cushion.
The Pioneers added two more in the seventh behind a two-run triple by Tim Sylvester for an 11-3 lead. Wallace singled in Santos in the eighth, but UML could muster no closer.
