Baseball: Maloney, UMass Lowell Shuts Out Pace, 3-0
Maloney strikes out nine over eight innings on mound; improves to 4-3

LOWELL, Mass. (April 27, 2008) – Jeffrey Maloney (Haverhill, Mass.) scattered three hits and struck out nine and UMass Lowell defeated Pace, 3-0, Sunday afternoon in Northeast-10 baseball action at LeLacheur Park.

The River Hawks took two of three games in the weekend series against Pace and improve to 22-20 overall and 16-9 in the NE-10. The Setters have dropped four of their last five and fall to 28-16-1 overall and 17-7-1 in the NE-10 with the loss.

Maloney allowed just three hits over eight innings to improve to 4-3 on the season. The junior right hander struck out nine and walked five. He threw 123 pitches, 68 strikes.

Anthony Santos (Chelmsford, Mass.) and Luke Wallace (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) each went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Wallace singled home the River Hawks first run in the fourth. Peter Wolstenholme (Fall River, Mass.) scored the run.

Santos plated UML’s second run of the contest with a single to right field. Sean Burns (Colchester, Vt.) scored on Santos’ single. Felix Martinez (Miami, Fla.) scored the third and final run of the afternoon on a wild pitch.

Mark Sakelakos (Peabody, Mass.) struck out one in a perfect ninth to record his third save of the season.

Dustin Corbett (Vestal, N.Y.) took the loss allowing one run on six hits over six innings of play. Corbett struck out five and walked two.

The River Hawks return to action Monday night when they host Assumption. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
