Manton pitches 8.1 shutout innings, goes 2-for-4 at plate
LOWELL, Mass. (April 21, 2008) – Tim Manton (Swansea, Mass.) pitched 8.1 innings of shutout baseball and went 2-for-4 at the plate as UMass Lowell shutout New Haven, 1-0, Monday night in non-conference baseball action at LeLacheur Park.
The River Hawks have won nine of the last 10 and improve to 20-17 overall with the win. The Chargers have dropped two straight and fall to 17-19 with the loss.
Manton allowed just seven hits and struck out three over his 8.1 innings on the mound. Manton improves to 2-0 on the season with the win. Manton was also 2-for-4 at the plate.
Peter Wolstenholme (Fall River, Mass.), who was 2-for-3, provided the only offense of the game with an RBI double in the fifth inning. Wolsteholme’s double scored Graeme Clohosey (Derry, N.H.), who walked with one out.
Vince Leham (Groton, Mass.) took the loss in relief for New Haven. Leham allowed one run on three hits in three innings.
Mark Sakelakos (Peabody, Mass.) got the save, his second of the season, working the final two-thirds of the game.
The River Hawks return to action Tuesday afternoon when they travel to Bryant. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m. The Chargers are next in action Wednesday at Bridgeport.
