Lions Win Opener, 15-5; River Hawks Take Nightcap, 8-6
BOCA RATON, FL (Mar. 14, 2008) – Senior CF Tim Manton (Swansea, MA) batted 3 for 4 with two doubles and two runs in the nightcap as UMass Lowell split with Molloy College, losing the opener 15-5 but winning the rematch 8-6 Friday at Florida Atlantic University.
With the split, UML stands at 1-7 overall entering Saturday’s twin bill against Dowling (12:00) to be played at Barry University. Molloy is currently 7-6 and meets Southern Connecticut Saturday (4:30) at the Santa Luces Sports Complex.
In the opener, the Lions scored in all but one inning en route to 15 runs on 13 hits. Sophomore Tim Greig led Molloy as he batted 3 for 4 with five RBI while junior Keith Kenny went 2 for 3 with three walks and a two-run home run.
Junior pitcher Brian Powers earned the win as he improved to 3-0. Senior James Barry (Chelmsford, MA) took the loss to slip to 0-3.
Freshman Sean Burns (Colchester, VT) led UML, hitting 2 for 5 with one RBI while sophomore Peter Onorato (Clarence Center, NY) went 2 for 3 with a double.
In the nightcap, sophomore pitcher Peter Wolstenholme (Haverhill, MA) earned his first collegiate win as he led the River Hawks out of a bases-loaded, none-out jam in the bottom of the seventh inning to give UML Head Coach Ken Harring his 99th win as the River Hawks coach.
Freshman pitcher Kyle Davis (Rochester, NH) started the game and scattered seven hits, three walks and six strikeouts in 3.2 innings. Davis allowed six hits, two runs and a walk while striking out one.
Senior pitcher Steven DeJesus took the loss and slipped to 2-1.
UML erupted for four runs in the fifth inning to emerge from a 4-4 deadlock. Manton started the rally with an RBI double to score freshman Mark Wiggins (Rochester, NH), and later scored on a wild pitch. Sophomore Luke Wallace (Yorktown Heights, NY) singled home junior Tim Keene (Berlin, NH), stole second and scored on a single by senior Anthony Santos (Chelmsford, MA).
The Lions pulled two runs back in the sixth, but were unable to muster any closer.
Santos batted 2 for 3 with one RBI while sophomore Taylor von Kriegenbergh (Stoneham, MA) went 1 for 3 with a two-run home run.
Grieg batted 3 for 4 with four RBI to lead Molloy while sophomore Nolan Kusich went 3 for 5 with two stolen bases.
