Tim Manton collects two hits for River Hawks
RINDGE, N.H. (April 8, 2008) – Tim Manton (Swansea, Mass.) went 2-for-5 with a run scored but Franklin Pierce defeated UMass Lowell, 10-2, in Northeast-10 baseball action Tuesday afternoon at Dr. Pappas Field.
The Ravens have won four straight and improve to 22-3 overall and 7-1 in the NE-10 with the win. The River Hawks had their three game win streak snapped and fall to 11-15 overall and 8-4 in the NE-10 with the loss.
The Ravens opened the scoring with a run in the first and broke the game open in an eight-run third. FPU added to its lead with another run in the fourth.
Kevin Renaud (Southbridge, Mass.) was 2-for-2 with a two-run home run and two runs scored in the third. Renaud was 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBI on the afternoon.
Designated hitter Derek Ingui (Sterling, Mass.) had a three-run double in the third. Matt Anderson (Medford, Mass.) singled in two runs in the third.
In addition to Renaud, Ingui, Jake Christman (Newton, Mass.), Scott Savastano (Plymouth, Mass.), Cliff Hicks (Merrimack, N.H.) and Steve Carr (Nahant, Mass.) each had two hits in the game for FPU.
The River Hawks plated two runs in the fourth. Jared Notargiacomo (Newburyport, Mass.) knocked in both runs with a double to left center in the fourth.
Manton was the only River Hawk with multiple hits. Tim Keene (Berlin, N.H.), who was 0-for-3 with a walk, scored on the Notargiacomo double.
Brian Maloney (Brockton, Mass.) got the win for Franklin Pierce to improve to 4-0 on the season. Maloney allowed two runs on four hits over six innings. He struck out seven.
Three relievers – Corey Muscara (Manchester, N.H.), James Palmer (Stoneham, Mass.) and Vinny Gemma (Revere, Mass.) – combined to pitched three scoreless innings for FPU.
Kyle Davis (Rochester, N.H.) took the loss for the River Hawks to fall to 2-2 on the season. Davis surrendered seven runs on seven hits and walked four in 2.2 innings on the mound.
Matt Monico (Tewksbury, Mass.) relieved Davis gave up three runs on six hits in 3.1 innings of work. Mark Sakelakos (Peabody, Mass.) and Derek Anderson (Dracut, Mass.) also pitched in the game for UML.
The River Hawks next play Thursday night when they host Franklin Pierce. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. The Ravens are at Merrimack Wednesday.
