River Hawks score four runs in final two innings to earn victory
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (April 1, 2008) – Tim Keene (Berlin, N.H.) went 1-for-4 with two RBI as UMass Lowell defeated Southern Connecticut, 4-2, in Northeast-10 baseball action Tuesday afternoon.
The River Hawks have won three of their last four games and improve to 6-13 overall and 3-2 in the Northeast-10. The Owls have dropped two straight and fall to 12-12 overall and 2-3 in the NE-10.
UML scored all four of its runs in the final two innings of the contest, scoring three in the eighth and one more in the ninth. Keene delivered the big hit in the game with a two-run, two out single to right in the eighth.
Anthony Santos (Chelmsford, Mass.) also singled in a run in the eighth. Peter Wolstenholme (Fall River, Mass.) drove in the fourth run in the ninth.
The Owls opened the scoring in the fourth inning and took a 2-0 lead with a single run in the sixth. Billy Hite (Shelton, Conn.) doubled in the fourth inning run, and Karl Derbacher (Northford, Conn.) plated the sixth inning run with a double.
Jeffery Maloney (Haverhill, Mass.) got the start on the mound for the River Hawks and went the distance to earn the victory. Maloney allowed just two runs, one earned, on seven hits over nine innings of work. He struck out struck out five and walked just one.
Justin Cox (Newburgh, N.Y.) made the start and took the loss for Southern Connecticut. Cox surrendered three runs, all unearned, on five hits over eight innings of work. He struck out seven.
Kyle Penney (Columbia, Conn.) pitched the ninth for the Owls, allowing one run on one hit.
The River Hawks return to the field Wednesday for a doubleheader at 4:00 p.m. against Saint Anselm at LeLacheur Park. The Owls are next in action Wednesday when they travel to Assumption (3:30 p.m.).
