Baseball: River Hawks Stumble Against Dowling, 5-2

BOCA RATON, FL (Mar. 18, 2008) – Senior pitcher Chris Piotrowski scattered 10 strikeouts, five hits and a walk as Dowling College defeated UMass Lowell, 5-2, Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference baseball clash at Lynn University.

With the loss, UML slipped to 3-9 entering Wednesday’s game at Florida Institute of Technology (3:00) and Thursday’s Southern finale at Barry (6:00). Dowling improved to 9-4.

Senior Tim Manton (Swansea, MA) batted 2 for 3 with a double and one RBI while sophomore Jared Notargiacomo (Newburyport, MA) also hit 2 for 3 with a run.

Senior P James Barry (Chelmsford, MA) took the loss as he slipped to 0-3. Barry scattered five hits, four walks and a strikeout over 3.1 innings while sophomore Matt Monico (Tewksbury, MA) allowed three hits and no walks and struck out three over 3.0 innings.

Freshman Ralph Tufano led the Golden Lions, batting 2 for 3 with one RBI while senior Chris Caputo also hit 2 for 3. Senior Kevin Reese batted 2 for 4.

Piotrowski improved to 2-1.

UML opened the scoring in the third inning as Manton doubled and later scored on a single by freshman Sean Burns (Colchester, VT). Dowling however, answered with four runs in the bottom half, capitalizing on two wild pitches and an error.

The River Hawks had a golden opportunity to close a 4-1 gap in the fifth when they loaded the bases with only one out, but Dowling thwarted any hopes with a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning.

UML pulled one back in the seventh when Notargiacomo singled, advanced to third on a double by sophomore Peter Wolstenholme (Fall River, MA), and scored on a groundout by Manton.
