Haley Hurls Two-Hitter in Nightcap
MIAMI SHORES, FL (Mar. 14, 2008) – Junior pitcher Jeff Maloney (Haverhill, MA) and sophomore pitcher Ted Haley (Cranston, RI) combined to allow just six hits as UMass Lowell swept Dowling College, 8-4 and 4-0, Saturday afternoon in a non-conference baseball doubleheader at Barry University.
With the sweep, UML improved to 3-7 overall entering Sunday’s single game clash against Adelphi (10:00) at Barry University. Dowling slipped to 6-4.
Ken Harring celebrated his 100th victory as UML’s head coach with the 8-4 win. To date, Harring is 101-61 early into his fourth season.
UML and Dowling meet again Tuesday (11:00) for a single game at Lynn University.
In the opener, Maloney allowed four hits, three walks and three earned runs while striking out eight to improve to 1-1. Senior P Chris Piotrowski suffered the loss for the Golden Lions and slipped to 1-1.
Senior Anthony Santos (Chelmsford, MA) led UML as he batted 3 for 4 with four RBI and a pair of doubles. Santos highlighted a first inning rally as drove in three runs with his first double to give UML a 3-1 lead.
Senior Tim Manton (Swansea, MA) went 2 for 5 with one RBI while sophomore Luke Wallace (Yorktown Heights, NY) hit 2 for 4 with one RBI. Sophomore Peter Onorato (Clarence Center, NY) batted 2 for 4 while sophomore Taylor von Kriegenbergh (Stoneham, MA) drove in one run.
The Golden Lions knotted the score with one run in the second inning and two more in the fourth, but Onorato scored on a ground out by Manton and junior Graeme Clohosey (Derry, NH) scored on a single by freshman Sean Burns (Colchester, VT) for a 6-4 lead.
Senior Kevin Reese batted 1 for 3 with two runs to lead Dowling.
In the nightcap, Haley allowed only two hits and no walks while striking out 11 in his first career start to lift the River Hawks to the 4-0 victory. Senior Brent Lotito suffered the loss for Dowling, slipping to 2-1.
Von Kriegenbergh batted 2 for 3 with an RBI double while Burns went 2 for 4 and junior Tim Keene (Berlin, NH) 2 for 2 with one run.
Von Kriegenbergh and Manton each had RBI doubles in the fourth and fifth innings to give UML a 2-0 lead. Freshman Felix Martinez (Miami, FL) then singled down the third base line and advanced to second on a throwing error to score von Kriegenbergh and Wallace for a 4-0 cushion.
