River Hawks fall for second time this week to Bulldogs
LOWELL, Mass. (April 24, 2008) – Jared Notargiacomo (Newburyport, Mass.) went 2-for-3 with a run scored, but Bryant University defeated UMass Lowell, 2-1, Thursday night in Northeast-10 baseball action at LeLacheur Park.
The Bulldogs have won six straight and improve to 33-14 overall and 20-5 in the NE-10 with the win. The River Hawks have dropped two straight, both to Bryant, and fall to 20-19 overall and 14-8 in the NE-10.
Brett Almeida (Fairhaven, Mass.) improved his record to 3-3 on the season pitching eight innings. Almeida allowed just one run on four hits and struck out four.
Offensively, Bryant scored single runs in each the second and sixth innings. Jason Alexander (Simsbury, Conn.) led off the inning reaching on an error. Two batters later Alexander scored when Nick Campbell (Raynham, Mass.) reached base on a fielder’s choice.
Taylor Ferguson (Charlton, Mass.) plated the Bulldogs’ sixth inning run with an infield single to short. Jeff Vigurs (South Windsor, Conn.), who led off the inning with a single up the middle, scored on the Ferguson single.
The River Hawks got on the board with a single run in the eighth. Notargiacomo doubled down the left field line in the eighth to lead off the inning and scored on a Peter Wolstenholme (Fall River, Mass.) ground out.
Dan White (Southboro, Mass.) got the loss for UML to fall to 3-4. White allowed two runs, one earned, on four hits in seven innings of work. The sophomore right hander struck out one and walked one.
Eric Polvani (Wallingford, Conn.) picked up the save for Bryant. Polvani fanned one in a perfect bottom of the ninth.
UMass Lowell returns to the field Saturday for a doubleheader at Pace University. The River Hawks and Setters meet again on Sunday at LeLacheur Park.
