Baseball: UMass Lowell Sweeps Bloomfield College in Non-Conference Doubleheader
River Hawks win Game 1, 3-2, and take Game 2, 12-3

LOWELL, Mass. (April 14, 2008) – Taylor von Kriegenbergh (Stoneham, Mass.) had two hits and an RBI in Game 1, and Sean Burns (Colchester, Vt.) had four hits and four RBI in Game 2, as UMass Lowell swept a non-conference baseball doubleheader with Bloomfield College at LeLacheur Park Monday.

The River Hawks won the first game, 3-2, in nine innings (scheduled seven inning game), and took the second game, 12-3.

UML has won four straight and improves to 15-16 on the season with the two wins. The Deacons have lost six of seven and fall to 12-24 with the two losses.

In game one, the Deacons scored first, as Ricky Maldonado (Lakewood, N.J.) knocked in the run with a double to right center.

The River Hawks took the lead with a run in the fourth and a run in the fifth. Both runs scored directly as a result of errors by Bloomfield shortstop Edwin Pagan (Burlington, N.J.).

Pagan’s first error of the contest, on a batted ball by Anthony Santos (Chelmsford, Mass.), scored Jared Notargiacomo (Newburyport, Mass.) in the fourth.

In the fifth Felix Martinez (Miami, Fla.) reached first on a single, but Pagan’s throw to first was wild, allowing Taylor von Kriegenbergh (Stoneham, Mass.) to score on the play.

The River Hawks led 2-1 entering the top of the seventh (seven inning game) and had closer Derek Anderson (Dracut, Mass.) in to close the game. Eric Tanis (Pequannock, N.J.) led off the inning and scored two batters later on a single to center by Jonathan Moehlig (Clarkson, Mich.).

In the bottom of the ninth, von Kriegenbergh drove in the winning run with a single to left. The winning hit followed an error on Deacon third baseman Christian Rosa (Perth Amboy, N.J.). Rosa’s error put runners on second and third.

Mark Sakelakos (Peabody, Mass.) got the win in relief for UML. The junior right hander worked the final 1.2 innings of the game and allowed just one hit.

Jon Walsh (Saddle Brook, N.J.) took the loss for Bloomfield. Walsh allowed one run, an unearned run, on one hits in 2.1 innings.

Peter Wolstenholme (Fall River, Mass.) got the start for UML and pitched well, but did not figure into the decision.

Matthew Snyder (Bensalem, Pa.) got the start for Bloomfield, but also did not figure into the decision. Snyder allowed two runs, both unearned, on five hits in six innings.

In game two the River Hawks scored early and often, building a 7-0 lead after two innings of play. UML scored three in the first, four in the second, and two in each the fourth and sixth. The Deacons scored one in the third and two in the fifth.

Burns collected four of UML’s 10 hits in the game, and knocked in four of its 10 runs. The freshman infielder had RBI singles in the second, fourth and sixth, and plated a run with a bases loaded walk in the fifth. He also scored three times in the second game.

Luke Wallace (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) and Peter Onorato (Clearance Center, N.Y.) joined Burns with multiple hits in the contest. Wallace was 2-for-2 with three RBI, while Onorato was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Maldonado was 2-for-3 in game two for Bloomfield. He had four hits in the doubleheader.

Tim Manton (Swansea, Mass.) picked up his first win of the season on the mound. Manton allowed just one run on two hits over four innings of work. He struck out four and walked just one.

David Ricci (Jackson, N.J.) suffered the loss to fall to 2-3 for the Deacons. Ricci surrendered nine runs, four earned, on eight hits over 3.2 innings. He walked two and struck out one.

The River Hawks return to the field Tuesday at Saint Michael’s. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m. UML hosts Saint Rose on Thursday night (7:00 p.m.).
