Keene Drives in Four Runs Despite Loss
MELBOURNE, FL (Mar. 20, 2008) – Junior 1B Yudelmis Hernandez batted 2 for 3 with three RBI to lead Barry University over UMass Lowell, 11-7, Thursday night in a non-conference baseball clash at Feinbloom Field.
The loss was the fourth straight for UML, which slipped to 3-10 entering Monday’s clash at Assumption (3:30). The Buccaneers improved to 18-9.
Junior 3B Tim Keene (Berlin, NH) led the River Hawks as he batted 2 for 4 with four RBI, a home run and a double. Freshman LF Felix Martinez (Miami, FL) went 2 for 4 with two runs while freshman Sean Burns (Colchester, VT) went 2 for 4 with one run.
Freshman OF Andrew Pedrozo and senior Andrew Frezza each went 2 for 4 with two RBI and run for Barry.
Junior Jeff Maloney (Haverhill, MA) took the loss for UML and slipped to 1-2. Maloney scattered nine hits, 10 runs (eight earned), three walks and two strikeouts. Sophomore Aaron Main earned the win as he allowed nine hits, seven runs (five earned) and three walks while striking out two to improve to 4-2.
After sophomore RF Luke Wallace (Yorktown Heights, NY) gave UML a 1-0 lead in the first inning with an RBI double, the Bucs erupted for eight runs in the second inning and never looked back. Frezza highlighted the inning with a two-run home run.
The River Hawks added two more runs in the fifth behind an RBI single by Burns and an RBI double by Keene, but Barry matched them in the bottom half with two runs of its own.
Keene hit a two-run shot in the seventh to cut the lead to 10-5, but the Bucs added one more behind an RBI double by Pedrozo for an 11-5 lead.
Keene drove in his fourth run when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the ninth and Wallace followed with a sacrifice fly to score senior CF Tim Manton (Swansea, MA) to cut the deficit to 1-7, but UML could muster no closer.
