Wallace hits two-run home run, Manton has two hits and a run scored
LOWELL, Mass. (Mar. 26, 2008) – Luke Wallace (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) was 1-for-4 with a two-run home run as UMass Lowell defeated Assumption, 5-1, Wednesday afternoon in Northeast-10 baseball action at LeLacheur Park.
The River Hawks have won two straight and improve to 5-12 overall, 2-0 in conference play, with the win. The Greyhounds have dropped two straight, five of six, and fall to 5-8 overall and 1-2 in the NE-10 with the loss.
UML had five runs on five hits and two errors on the day. The River Hawks scored two in the second, two in the third and one in the eighth.
Tim Manton (Swansea, Mass.) led the way for UML going 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Wallace was 1-for-4 with a run and two RBI. Tim Keene (Berlin, N.H.) did not have a hit – 0-for-2 – but had two RBI.
Assumption had four hits and one error and plated its only run of the game in the top of the first inning. Chris Colletti (East Islip, N.Y.) was 2-for-4 with a run scored for the Greyhounds.
Wallace, a sophomore outfielder, provided all the offense the River Hawks needed in the bottom of the second with a two-run home run off the scoreboard in left field.
Keene and Manton each had an RBI in the two-run third. Manton tripled to lead off the eighth inning and scored the final insurance run of the afternoon for UML.
Ted Haley (Cranston, R.I.) got the start and the win for the River Hawks to improve to 2-2 on the season. Haley worked six innings and allowed just one run on two hits and struck out six.
Jeffery Maloney (Haverhill, Mass.) worked two shutout innings in relief. Derek Anderson (Dracut, Mass.) pitched a scoreless ninth for UML.
Andrew Quinn (Taunton, Mass.) took the loss for Assumption to fall to 0-3 on the season. Quinn surrendered four runs on four hits over six innings of work.
The River Hawks return to the field Thursday to host Bentley at 3:30 p.m. at LeLacheur Park. The Greyhounds are next in action Thursday to host Pace at 3:30 p.m.
