Baseball: River Hawks Stumble at Assumption, 11-8, in NE-10 Opener
Burns Goes 3 for 6, With Three RBI

WORCESTER, MA (Mar. 24, 2008) – Junior 2B Mike Baillargeon batted 3 for 6 with three RBI as Assumption College defeated UMass Lowell, 11-8, Monday afternoon in a Northeast-10 Conference baseball clash at Rocheleau Field.

The loss was the sixth straight for the River Hawks, who slipped to 3-12 overall and 0-1 in the NE-10 entering Tuesday’s clash at Bentley. The Greyhounds improved to 5-6 overall and 1-0 in the Conference.

Freshman 2B Sean Burns (Colchester, VT) went 3 for 6 with three RBI and a run to lead UML while sophomore RF Luke Wallace (Yorktown Heights, NY) batted 2 for 5.

Sophomore SS Chris Colletti hit 2 for 4 with three RBI and one run while freshman LF Wally Desrosiers also his 2 for 4 with one run and one RBI to fuel the Greyhounds. Sophomore C Matthew Jose went 3 for 5 with two runs while senior 3B Devin Murphy hit 2 for 2 with two runs, one RBI and three walks; and junior RF Steve Scannell 2 for 5 with one run and one RBI.

Senior P James Barry (Chelmsford, MA) took the loss as he slipped to 0-4, scattering 12 hits, seven runs, four walks and two strikeouts. Sophomore P Michael Colebrook earned the win as he allowed seven hits, three earned runs and two walks while striking out three.

The Greyhounds overcame a 1-0 deficit with four runs in the second inning and never looked back en route to the win. Baillargeon highlighted the inning with a bases-clearing triple.

UML cut the lead to 4-2 behind an RBI single by Burns, but Assumption responded with three more runs in the fifth inning, led by a sacrifice fly by Colletti, an RBI single by Desrosiers and an RBI double by Baillargeon to post a 7-2 cushion.

The River Hawks trailed 8-3 in the seventh, but chipped away with two runs behind RBI singles from junior 3B Tim Keene (Berlin, NH) and sophomore C Jared Notargiacomo (Newburyport, MA).

The Greyhounds answered with three runs in the eighth behind an RBI single by Scannell and a sacrifice fly by Colletti. Trailing 11-5 in the ninth, Burns drove in three runs with a double before he was thrown out at third to end the game.
