Freshman right hander strikes out career-high 11 in second straight shutout win

LOWELL, Mass. (April 20, 2008) – Kyle Davis (Rochester, N.H.) pitched a complete game shutout with 11 strikeouts as UMass Lowell defeated American International, 1-0, in Northeast-10 baseball action Sunday afternoon at LeLacheur Park.

The River Hawks have won eight of their last nine games and improves to 19-17 overall and 14-6 in the NE-10 with the win. The Yellow Jackets have dropped three of their last four and fall to 9-19 overall and 7-13 in the NE-10 with the loss.

Davis earned his second straight win, and second straight complete game shutout to improve to 3-3 on the season. He fanned a career high 11 on 108 pitches (84 strikes) and allowed just five base runners to reach second base.

The Yellow Jackets best chance against Davis came in the second inning when they loaded the bases on three straight singles to open the frame. Davis struck out the next two hitters and got out of the inning when AIC left fielder Louis Saunders (Garfield, N.J.) grounded into a fielder’s choice.

After the second inning Davis allowed just four more base runners on two hits, an error and a fielder’s choice.

UML plated its only run of the game in the bottom of the first inning. Tim Manton (Swansea, Mass.) led off the inning with a bunt single and scored two batters later on an RBI single from Sean Burns (Colchester, Vt.).

Nick Noblit (Westfield, Mass.) took the loss to fall to 0-6 on the season despite allowing just the one run on three hits in seven innings of work. Noblit struck out seven and walked two.

Davis won his last start, 3-0, on April 15 at Saint Rose. He struck out 10 in that outing, which was his career high before Sunday’s 11-strikeout performance.

Peter Wolstenholme (Fall River, Mass.) was 2-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to four games. He has three straight multi-hit games.

The River Hawks return to the field Monday at 6:00 p.m. when they host New Haven in a non-conference game at LeLacheur Park. The Yellow Jackets return to action Tuesday when they travel to Southern Connecticut.
