Baseball: Late Rally Lifts American International Past UMass Lowell, 9-8
Tim Manton has three hits and four RBI, but River Hawks lose on walk-off HR

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (April 19, 2008) – Tim Manton (Swansea, Mass.) went 3-for-5 with four RBI and two runs, but John Shiver (Ayer, Mass.) hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth to lift American International past UMass Lowell, 9-8, Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 baseball action at AIC Park.

The victory snapped a two-game losing streak for the Yellow Jackets, who improve to 9-21 overall and 7-12 in the NE-10. The River Hawks had their seven-game win streak with the loss and fall to 18-17 overall and 13-6 in the NE-10.

Shiver was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. He scored one of the Yellow Jackets three runs in the sixth and homered in the ninth to give AIC the victory.

In addition to Shiver Jason Rustico (Southington, Conn.), David Dest (Orange, Conn.), Kyle McNiff (Westford, Mass.), Mike Massery (Pittsfield, Mass.) and Louis Saunders (Garfield, N.J.) each had a multiple hit game.

Manton was one of four River Hawks with multiple hits on the day. Tim Keene (Berlin, N.H.) also had three hits, while Peter Wolstenholme (Fall River, Mass.), Anthony Santos (Chelmsford, Mass.) and Jared Notargiacomo (Newburyport, Mass.) each had two hits.

The River Hawks scored first with two runs in the top of the first. They added five more runs in the sixth and led 8-6 after six.

The Yellow Jackets rallied with four runs over the final four innings of play including Shiver’s home run in the ninth.

Sean Stevenson (Holyoke, Mass.) got the win for AIC, pitching a scoreless ninth. Yellow Jacket starter Uchon Yi (Windsor Locks, Conn.) allowed seven runs, six earned, on 11 hits in five innings.

Derek Anderson (Dracut, Mass.) took the loss, allowing one run on one hit in one-third of an inning. UML starter James Barry (Chelmsford, Mass.) pitched six innings and surrendered six runs, five earned, on nine hits.

The River Hawks are next in action Sunday when they host American International at 1:00 p.m. at LeLacheur Park.
