(1992) - Possibly the finest distance runner in school history, Dave Dunham earned more All-American citations (seven) than any other men's cross country/track & field competitor in school history. He was elected to the Athletic Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility.
During his five years (1982-87) at the University of Lowell, Dave was a three-time cross country All-American and twice each in the 5K meters indoors and 10K meters outdoors. During his fifth year after red-shirting in 1985-86 for medical reasons, Dave became the first competitor to be al All-American in all three seasons during the same academic year.
In cross country, Dave's best finish among his three All-American performances was fourth in 1986 which was the best finish by a Lowell competitor until this past fall. He was 23rd in 1983 for his first All-American award and helped lead the team to a third place finish. He was twelfth in 1984 when he also captured the Codfish Bowl and Eastern League individual championships.
On the indoor circuit, Dave was an All-American at 5K meters in 1985 and 1987 after placing fifth and fourth, respectively. He was All-New England (top three finisher) in the same years and was All-Eastern league four times (three times in the two mile). Amazingly, he does not hold any individual school records indoors. He is a member of the record 4 x one-mile relay team.
Outdoors, Dave was an All-American at 10K meters in 1984 and 1987. He qualified for the NCAA's in the 10K meters three times and once in the 5K meters, and scored in the meet three times. He missed qualifying for All-American honors in 1985 by just one place. He was on the Eastern League championship at 10K meters in 1984, and still holds the school record for the 5K and 10K meters.
Dave has continued his running career winning numerous local and regional road races, and finished 17th in the 1990 Boston marathon. He has also qualified for the US Olympic trials in the marathon which was held in Columbus, OH.
The 1987 recipient of the Lester H. Cushing Award as the school's outstanding male athlete, Dave worked with head coach George Davis for one year as an assistant coach.
