Usually host to intense competition on the volleyball and basketball courts, Costello Gymnasium welcomed some of the youngest River Hawk fans through its doors on Dec. 12. The UMass Lowell Student-Athlete Advisory Committee’s Annual Rowdy’s Kid’s Night Out saw 80 area children participate in games and activities with River Hawk athletes for a good cause, raising $1,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

“The event was a success,” Senior Associate Athletic Director and SAAC supervisor Joan Lehoullier said. “The kids in attendance had a great time and our student-athletes had just as much fun volunteering for such a wonderful cause.”

Local children were dropped off at Costello to spend an evening while parents caught up on holiday shopping or enjoyed a quiet night out. The kids interacted with 50 of their favorite River Hawk student-athletes, representing nearly every varsity team, throughout the night.

Participants ranged from 5-12 years old and participated in games like kickball, basketball and volleyball, went swimming and made arts-and-crafts to bring home and share with their families.

“The money raised from this event will help us meet our goal of sponsoring the wish of a local child,” Lehoullier said. “Come May, the SAAC is determined to donate a check to the Make-A-Wish Foundation for $7,500.”

UMass Lowell’s SAAC is a committee of student-athletes that meet regularly and plan events to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting leadership opportunities, protecting student-athlete welfare, fostering a positive student-athlete image and providing educational and community service opportunities.

The group has raised more than $20,000 for Make-A-Wish over the past few years through year-round volunteer work and fundraising.
