Softball: River Hawks Sweep Saint Anselm, 12-2, 10-4
Guanci, Tanguay, Lajoie Lead Hot Bats

LOWELL, MA (Apr. 9, 2008) – Junior 1B Jachael Guanci (Everett, MA) batted 4 for 7 with six RBI and four runs as UMass Lowell defeated Saint Anselm, 12-2 and 10-4, Wednesday afternoon in a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader at River View Field.

With the victories, UML improved to 12-10 overall and 7-3 in the NE-10 entering Saturday’s non-conference twin bill at home against Adelphi (3:00). Saint Anselm slipped to 7-7 overall and 1-3 in the Conference.

Senior OF Laurie Tanguay (Lowell, MA) batted a combined 5 for 7 with four runs and one RBI while junior Stacey Lajoie went 3 for 7 with five RBI and three runs.

In the opener, UMass Lowell erupted for nine runs in the third inning en route to the win. Guanci batted 3 for 4 with four RBI, three runs and her third home run of the season. Tanguay went 2 for 3 with two RBI and one run while Lajoie hit 1 for 3 with her fourth home run of the year, a three-run shot to right center.

Freshman DH Hannah May (Hardwick, MA) batted 2 for 2 with one run and one RBI while senior C Julie Brodie (Chelmsford, MA) went 1 for 3 with two RBI and a run.

Freshman DH Jaclyn Giannino (Beverly, MA) led the Hawks, hitting 2 for 2 with two RBI while junior CF Katherine Theodorou (Glen Cove, NY) went 1 for 2 with two runs.

Sophomore Lindsay Farmer (Kingston, NH) improved to 6-4 with her fifth win in her last six outings. Farmer allowed four hits, two earned runs and two walks while striking out four. Sophomore P Katie Corey (Weymouth, MA) took the loss as she scattered 10 runs (all earned), eight hits and three walks.

The Hawks jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first behind an RBI double by Giannino, but Guanci gave UML a 2-1 lead with a two-run shot to straightaway centerfield. UML took a 3-1 lead  in the second behind an RBI bunt by May, then put the game out of reach in the third.

Tanguay got the rally started with an RBI single while Lajoie followed with a three-run shot to right center for a 7-2 cushion. Brodie and Guanci then followed with two-run singles and Tanguay capped the rally with an RBI single for a 12-2 lead.

In the nightcap, UML scored all 10 runs in the first four innings, including five in the first inning. Tanguay batted 3 for 4 with three runs while Lajoie went 2 for 4 with two runs and two RBI. Freshman SS Stephanie Rollo (Dracut, MA) went 2 for 4 with one run and sophomore 3B Heather Ross (Waltham, MA) hit 2 for 3 with two RBI.

Sophomore P Megan Lemire (Worcester, MA) and freshman 2B Liz LeBrun (Rowley, MA) each led Saint Anselm, hitting 2 for 3 with one run. Sophomore LF Theresa Foley (Byfield, MA) batted 1 for 2 with a grand slam and Theodorou went 2 for 3.

Sophomore P Katie Hebert (Lowell, MA) earned the win to improve to 3-3. Hebert allowed six hits, four runs (all earned) and a walk over 4.1 innings. Sophomore Lisa Caruso (Granby, CT) took the loss as she allowed 13 hits, 10 runs (eight earned) and no walks in 4.0 innings.

Guanci highlighted UML’s five-run first inning with a two-run shot, her fourth, while Lajoie and freshman Hilary Hopkins (Poway, CA) followed with RBI singles. The River Hawks added two more in the second, both on errors, while a sacrifice fly by Brodie gave UML an 8-0 cushion in the third.

With UML leading 10-0 in the fifth, Foley gave the Hawks a lifeline with her grand slam, but freshman P Emily Wolf (Salem, NH) relieved Hebert over the final 2.2 innings and surrendered only one hit.
