Another Milestone for Tanguay
LOWELL, MA (Apr. 26, 2008) – Junior CF Stacey Lajoie (Gardner, MA) collectively batted 4 for 6 with three runs and an RBI and senior LF Laurie Tanguay (left - Lowell, MA) set the career RBI mark as UMass Lowell defeated the College of Saint Rose, 6-4 and 4-1, Saturday afternoon in a Northeast-10 Conference twin bill at River View Field.
With the victories, UML improved to 24-20 overall and 17-7 in the NE-10 entering Sunday’s doubleheader at home against Le Moyne (12:00). The River Hawks cap the regular season Monday at home against Southern Connecticut (3:00).
Saint Rose slipped to 15-21 overall and 12-14 in the Conference.
Tanguay highlighted game two as she drove in two runs to become the UML softball program’s all-time leader in RBI with the 125th and 126th of her career, surpassing the previous mark of 125 set by former standout Donna Mills (1993-96).
With her second RBI of the game, Tanguay tied the single season RBI record of 42 which she currently shares with former player Laurie Zanca (1992-95).
In the opener, the River Hawks broke a 3-3 tie in the fifth inning when senior 1B Jachael Guanci (Everett, MA) doubled and later scored on a wild pitch for a 4-3 lead. Lajoie cracked her eighth home run of the season – one shy of tying her own school record – and senior C Julie Brodie (Chelmsford, MA) doubled and later scored on a fielder’s choice in the sixth for a 6-3 lead.
The Golden Knights stormed back, however, as senior 2B Danielle Encizo (Bayshore, NY) walked and later scored on a single by senior P Kristen Calahan (LaGrange, NY) to cut the lead to 6-4. After singles by sophomore C Amanda Morano (Highland, NY) and sophomore 3B Lauren Ruggerio (New Windsor, NY) to load the bases, sophomore pitcher Lindsay Farmer (Kingston, NH) ended the game with a strikeout.
Farmer improved to 11-10 on the year as she surrendered 10 hits, four runs (earned) and four walks while striking out six. Calahan took the loss, slipping to 6-12, as she scattered 10 hits, six runs (four earned) and no walks while striking out three.
Lajoie batted 4 for 4 with three singles, two runs and the aforementioned home run while Guanci went 2 for 4 with two RBI and a run. Brodie also batted 2 for 4 with two runs while freshman SS Stephanie Rollo (Dracut, MA) batted 2 for 4 with one RBI.
Morano batted 3 for 3 with one run while Ruggerio went 2 for 3 with two RBI and junior 1B Katie Wiemann (Huntington Station, NY) 2 for 3 with one RBI. Encizo hit 1 for 2 with two runs and a walk.
In the nightcap, UML scored two runs in the sixth inning to put the game out of reach behind Tanguay’s milestone RBI double and an RBI single by Rollo. The River Hawks opened the scoring in the first inning behind an RBI triple from Tanguay and an RBI single by Guanci.
The Golden Knights pulled a run back in the fifth when junior LF Cara Piccarreto (Rochester, NY) walked and later scored on a sacrifice fly from senior SS Jessica Pastore (East Greenbush, NY).
Tanguay led the UML bats, hitting 2 for 3 with two RBI and two runs while Brodie batted 1 for 2 with a run.
Freshman P Nicole Monroe (Townsend, MA) earned the win to improve to 8-5, scattering five hits, one earned run, two walks and five strikeouts. Junior P Tracy Cheseborough (Duanesburg, NY) took the loss, allowing six hits, four earned runs and a walk while striking out 10 to slip to 9-8.
Sophomore Megan Rios (Kingston, NY) led Saint Rose, hitting 3 for 3 with a double.
