Softball: River Hawks Sweep Penmen to Halt Streak, 3-0, 4-1
Brodie Goes 3 for 6 With Two Runs; Monroe Hurls Three-Hitter

LOWELL, MA (Apr. 22, 2008) – Senior 2B Julie Brodie (Chelmsford, MA) batted a collective 3 for 6 with two runs and freshman P Nicole Monroe (Townsend, MA) pitched a three-hitter as UMass Lowell swept Southern New Hampshire University, 3-0 and 4-1 Tuesday, in a Northeast-10 Conference twin bill at Penmen Field.

The victories halted a six-game losing skid for the River Hawks, who improved to 20-18 overall and 13-5 in the NE-10 entering Thursday’s clashes at Assumption (3:00). The Penmen slipped to 10-17 overall and 6-10 in the Conference.

In the opener, junior CF Stacey Lajoie (Gardner, MA) batted 3 for 4 with a run and Brodie 2 for 3 with two runs to lead the River Hawks. Freshman 3B Hilary Hopkins (Poway, CA) went 2 for 3 with one RBI while freshman DH Emily Wolf (Salem, NH) hit 1 for 3 with one RBI.

Sophomore P Lindsay Farmer (Kingston, NH) improved to 9-9 as she allowed seven hits and four walks while striking out two for her fourth shutout of the season. Junior P Ashley Bernstein took the loss as she scattered eight hits, three runs (two earned) and six walks while striking out four to slip to 4-9.

Senior 1B Ashley Guertin led SNHU, hitting 3 for 3 with a double while freshman LF Casey Stoodley went 2 for 3.

UML opened the scoring in the first inning behind an RBI single by Hopkins, and added two more in the fifth behind an RBI walk to freshman SS Stephanie Rollo (Dracut, MA) and an RBI single by Wolf.

In the nightcap, UML jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two innings. Brodie accounted for UML’s run in the first inning when she was hit by a pitch and later scored on an error while freshman LF Hannah May (Hardwick, MA) scored on a groundout to Lajoie and senior CF Laurie Tanguay (Lowell, MA) hit a sacrifice fly to score sophomore 3B Heather Ross (Waltham, MA).

SNHU pulled one run back in the fourth on an RBI single to junior 2B Valerie Martins (Somerset, MA).

Ross batted 2 for 3 with a run while sophomore RF Jillian McAllister (Lowell, MA) went 2 for 4 with one RBI. Monroe improved to 6-3 as she allowed three hits, three walks and an earned run while striking out two.

Senior P Mary Bradford yielded eight hits, four runs (one earned) and four walks while striking out three to slip to 6-7.
