Guanci Goes 4 for 4, Tanguay 3 for 4
KISSIMMEE, FL (Mar. 20, 2008) – Senior Jachael Guanci (Everett, MA) batted 4 for 4 while senior Laurie Tanguay (Lowell, MA) went 3 for 4 to lead UMass Lowell over Philadelphia University, 9-8, Thursday in a non-conference softball clash at the Rebel Spring Games.
The win was UML’s second in three games as it improved to 2-5 and wraps its trip Friday with a twin bill against Augustana (SD) (9:00) and Northern State (SD) (1:00). Philadelphia slipped to 2-10.
UML’s earlier game against Concordia University of Nebraska was cancelled due to rain.
Guanci also scored two runs and drove in another while Tanguay had two RBI. Sophomore Heather Ross (Waltham, MA) hit 3 for 4 (singles) with one run and one RBI.
Freshman Nicole Monroe (Townsend, MA) hurled the final two innings for her first win of the year. Sophomore Lindsay Farmer (Kingston, NH) started the game and scattered six hits, and two walks while striking out five.
Senior Jacque Curtis took the loss, slipping to 0-4. Freshman Jen Richard batted 2 for 4 with a walk and one run to lead the Rams.
UML jumped out to a 5-0 lead, highlighted by a three-run third inning in which Tanguay hit an RBI single while sophomore Katie Hebert (Lowell, MA) followed with a sacrifice fly and freshman Hilary Hopkins (Poway, CA) an RBI single.
Philadelphia stormed back in the fifth with five runs to knot the score, but the River Hawks answered with three more in the bottom half of the inning, highlighted by an RBI single by Guanci and a two-run double by Tanguay.
The Rams threatened in the seventh with three runs, led by an RBI single from sophomore Devyn O’Neill, who later scored on a throwing error, and an RBI single by sophomore Kelly Rauco.
