River Hawks Capitalize on Charger Miscues, 7-1; Early Fireworks Lift South Dakota, 11-4
KISSIMMEE, FL (Mar. 19, 2008) – Sophomore P Lindsay Farmer (Kingston, NH) scattered six hits and one earned run while striking out six as UMass Lowell defeated Dominican, 7-1, and fell to the University of South Dakota, 11-4, Wednesday in a pair of non-conference softball games at the Rebel Spring Games.
With the split, UML stands at 1-7 entering Thursday’s games against Concordia (NE) at 11:00 and Philadelphia at 3:00. Dominican slipped to 1-9.
Farmer improved to 1-2 with the victory. Junior Gina Pollitt took the loss for the Chargers.
Senior Jachael Guanci (Everett, MA) batted 3 for 4 (singles) with two runs while freshman Hilary Hopkins (Poway, CA) went 2 for 4 with one RBI and one run.
UML scored three runs in the fourth inning and two more in the fifth, capitalizing on three errors, to post a 6-1 cushion. In the fourth, Guanci and Hopkins each scored on a throwing error while freshman Hannah May (Hardwick, MA) later reached home on an error.
Junior Jamie Ollari led Dominican as she batted 1 for 2 with a walk and an RBI double.
In the nightcap, South Dakota erupted for 10 runs in the first inning and never looked back as sophomore Brittany Donohue batted 2 for 4 and scored two runs.
The River Hawks pulled four runs back in the third behind RBI singles from Guanci, Hopkins, Hebert and senior Julie Brodie (Chelmsford, MA). Brodie batted 3 for 4 with three singles while senior Laurie Tanguay (Lowell, MA) went 2 for 4 with a single and an RBI.
Freshman Rachel Schafler (Floral Park, NY) took the loss to slip to 0-1. Freshman Nicole Monroe (Townsend, MA) scattered three walks, two hits and two strikeouts over 6.2 innings.
Freshman Cortney Heim earned win for the Coyotes to improve to 3-1
