Late Runs Costly in 14-4 Loss to Holy Family; Early Barrage Haunts UML in 5-2 loss to UNO
KISSIMMEE, FL (Mar. 17, 2008) – Senior LF Laurie Tanguay (Lowell, MA) and junior Stacey Lajoie (Gardner, MA) combined for five RBI as UMass Lowell suffered a 14-4 loss to Holy Family and a 5-2 setback to No. 7 Nebraska-Omaha Monday in a pair of non-conference softball clashes at the Rebel Spring Games.
With the losses, UML slipped to 0-4 entering Wednesday’s games against Dominican (1:00) and the University South Dakota (3:00). Holy Family improved to 1-1 while UNO extended its winning streak to seven games to improve to 11-2.
In the opener, Holy Family (1-1) erupted for seven runs in the fifth inning and four more in the sixth to emerge from a 3-2 lead. Sophomore P Katie Hebert (Lowell, MA) took the loss to slip to 0-2 as she scattered three earned runs over four innings.
Sophomore P Jody Searfoss earned her first win of the season for the Tigers. Senior Dana Palotta batted 2 for 4 with two runs and a home run while sophomore SS Dolores Brown went 3 for 4 (singles) with three runs.
Tanguay batted 2 for 3 with three RBI while senior Jachael Guanci (Everett, MA) hit 2 for 3 with a double and a run. Senior Julie Brodie (Chelmsford, MA) batted 0-1 with two walks and a fielder’s choice.
In the nightcap, UNO scored all five runs in the first inning en route to the 5-2 win. Senior Leslie Svoboda fueled the inning with an RBI double while senior Jenifer McDowell followed with a two-run double.
Senior Chanel Reaves led the Mavericks, hitting 3 for 4 (singles) with a run while sophomore Julia Krejci went 2 for 3 with two singles and an RBI.
The River Hawks pulled two runs back in the fourth behind a two-run double by Lajoie, which scored Brodie (walk) and Tanguay (single). Lajoie batted 1 for 3 to lead UML, which was held to four hits.
Sophomore P Lindsay Farmer (Kingston, NH) took the loss as she scattered 10 hits, four earned runs and a strikeout to slip to 0-2. Freshman Beth Haley earned the win for UNO to improve to 4-0.
