Guanci’s Heroics Not Enough as River Hawks Cap Season

SYRACUSE, NY (May 3, 2008) – Senior 2B Dana Jo Ketchel hit an RBI single in the top of the eighth inning to lift No. 5 Pace University over No. 4 UMass Lowell, 2-1, Saturday in the quarterfinal round of Northeast-10 Conference softball Tournament at Le Moyne College’s Niland Athletic Complex.

With the loss, the River Hawks slipped to 24-25 overall and likely end the season. Pace (29-20), which later fell to No. 1 Le Moyne, 4-1, on Saturday, awaits NCAA Tournament pairings to be announced Sunday night.

The Setters took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when junior CF Christina Pane singled and eventually scored on a groundout. The River Hawks leveled in the fifth inning when senior 1B Jachael Guanci (Everett, MA) led off with a solo home run to left centerfield, her seventh of the season.

Guanci batted 2 for 3 to lead UML while senior CF Laurie Tanguay (Lowell, MA) and freshman DH Emily Wolf (Salem, NH) each batted 1 for 3.

Sophomore P Lindsay Farmer (Kingston, NH) slipped to 11-13 as she surrendered six hits, two earned runs and three walks while striking out four. Junior P Kiryl Shada earned the win as she scattered four hits, one earned run and no walks while striking out seven.

Pane led the Pace bats, hitting 2 for 3.
