Tanguay Bats 5 for 9; Farmer, Hebert Notch Victories
LAKEWOOD, NJ (Apr. 5, 2008) – Senior LF Laurie Tanguay (Lowell, MA) batted 5 for 9 with three RBI and two runs as the UMass Lowell softball team went 2-1 Saturday at the Georgian Court University Tournament in Lakewood, NJ.
UML opened the day with a 12-0 victory over Dowling followed by a 3-1 triumph over No. 16 Georgian Court and a 6-4 loss to New York Institute of Technology in the nightcap.
UML improved to 9-9 overall entering tomorrow’s games against NYIT (10:00) and the University of Bridgeport (12:00).
UMass Lowell 12, Dowling 0
Freshman DH Hannah May (Hardwick, MA) batted 3 for 3 with two runs while Tanguay went 2 for 2 with three RBI, including her second home run of the year, as UMass Lowell defeated Dowling, 12-0.
The River Hawks erupted for 11 of their runs in the first three innings. Senior 1B Jachael Guanci (Everett, MA) also helped the surge as she batted 2 for 4 with two singles, two runs and one RBI.
Sophomore P Katie Hebert (Lowell, MA) allowed two hits and two walks while striking out one to improve to 2-3. Freshman P Jamie Stalter took the loss as she scattered seven hits, six runs (three earned) and two strikeouts to slip to 1-8.
Dowling slipped to 8-18 with the loss.
UMass Lowell 3, No. 16 Georgian Court 1
Junior CF Stacey Lajoie (Gardner, MA) batted 2 for 3 with two RBI and a run as UMass Lowell defeated No. 16 Georgian Court, 3-1, in the second of three games Saturday.
Sophomore 3B Heather Ross (Waltham, MA) went 1 for 3 with one RBI while Tanguay batted 1 for 3 with one run and Hebert 1 for 2. Senior C Heather Walker led the Lions, hitting 3 for 4 with one run.
Sophomore P Lindsay Farmer (Kingston, NH) earned the victory – her third in her last four games – to improve to 4-4, while freshman P Diana Sansevera took the loss. Farmer allowed seven his, two walks and one earned run while striking out eight. Sansevera slipped to 1-1 as she scattered six hits, three earned runs, three walks and seven strikeouts.
UML took a 2-0 lead in the fourth when Tanguay singled and Lajoie followed with a two-run shot, her third of the year. In the sixth, freshman DH Hilary Hopkins (Poway, CA) reached on a fielder’s choice and scored on a double by Ross for a 3-0 cushion.
The Lions (18-8) pulled one back in the sixth on an RBI single by freshman RF Courtney Cuevas.
New York Institute of Technology 6, UMass Lowell 4
Senior Annel Sanchez belted a three-run home run in the fifth inning as New York Institute of Technology overcame a 4-1 deficit to turn back UMass Lowell, 6-4.
Guanci batted 2 for 4 with one run and an RBI double to lead UML while Tanguay also hit 2 for 4 with a double. May batted 2 for 3 with one RBI.
UML scored two runs in the first inning behind Guanci’s RBI double and an RBI single by Lajoie. May later singled in Ross, who had doubled, for a 3-1 lead.
Freshman P Emily Wolf (Salem, NH) took the loss as she relieved Monroe in the fourth inning and surrendered five runs – all unearned – and four hits while striking out three to slip to 1-1. Monroe went four innings, allowing five hits and a run while striking out two.
Senior Ashley Petraglia earned the win for the Bears to improve to 2-1.
