River Hawks Dealt a No-No in Opener
SMITHFIELD, RI (Apr. 17, 2008) – UMass Lowell suffered its first sweep of the season and was dealt a no-hitter in the opener, losing 3-0 and 4-3 at Bryant University Thursday afternoon in a Northeast-10 Conference softball twin bill at the BU Softball complex.
With the sweep, UML slipped to 18-14 overall and 11-5 in the NE-10. Bryant improved to 19-7 overall and 16-0 in the Conference.
The River Hawks visit Dowling Saturday (1:00) and C.W. Post Sunday (12:00) in a pair of non-conference doubleheaders.
In the opener, senior P Janine Enos surrendered only two walks while striking out two en route to the no-hitter to improve to 11-3. Sophomore P Lindsay Farmer (Kingston, NH) allowed seven hits, three runs (earned) and two walks while striking out one to slip to 8-7.
Sophomore SS Allison Chouinard batted 2 for 3 for the Bulldogs, which included an RBI double in the second inning, while freshman LF Regina Burdo went 1 for 2 with a run.
In the nightcap, UML scored three runs in the seventh inning, highlighted by a two-run double from sophomore 3B Heather Ross (Waltham, MA), but fell just short as Enos relieved freshman P Samantha Houseal with one out and retired the next two UML batters.
Bryant jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third behind an RBI double from senior 3B Jessica Valentini, who later scored on an error. The Bulldogs added one in the fifth off an RBI triple from junior RF Kate Thomas, and one more in the sixth off an RBI single by sophomore CF Kim Breton.
Senior 1B Jachael Guanci (Everett, MA) led UML, going 4 for 4 with a run while Ross batted 1 for 3 with two RBI.
Houseal scattered seven hits, three runs (two earned) and four walks while striking out three to improve to 8-4. Enos earned her second save of the year.
Freshman P Nicole Monroe (Townsend, MA) slipped to 5-2 as she allowed eight hits, three runs (two earned) and a walk while striking out four.
