Softball: River Hawks Salvage Split at Bentley, 1-2, 12-3
Hopkins, Ross Combine for Six RBI in Nightcap

WALTHAM, MA (Apr. 2, 2008) – Senior 2B Julie Brodie (Chelmsford, MA) scored three runs and drove in two while senior 1B Jachael Guanci (Everett, MA) scored three runs in the nightcap as UMass Lowell split with Bentley College Wednesday in a Northeast-10 doubleheader in Waltham, MA.

Bentley won the opener 2-1, but UML avenged the loss in the second game, 12-3. With the split, UML stands at 7-8 overall and 4-2 in the NE-10 entering Friday’s twin bill at Pace (3:00). Bentley is currently 9-7 overall and 4-2 in the Conference.

In the opener, junior CF Dina Ferriero batted 3 for 3 while junior SS Alex Hitchcock went 1 for 2 with one RBI and freshman 2B Christine D’Amico 1 for 3 with an RBI.

Sophomore P Ashley Messina held UML to just three hits, one unearned run and no walks while striking out four to lift her record to 5-2. Sophomore P Lindsay Farmer (Kingston, NH) took the loss as she scattered seven hits, two runs and two walks while striking out four to slip to 3-4.

Freshman LF Hannah May (Hardwick, MA), sophomore 3B Heather Ross (Waltham, MA) and senior LF Laurie Tanguay (Lowell, MA) each had hits for UML.

The Falcons took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when D’Amico belted an RBI double, while Hitchcock did the same in the third inning for a 2-0 lead. UML pulled one back in the fifth when May singled, stole second and eventually reached home on an error.

In the nightcap, Guanci batted 3 for 3 with three runs while Brodie went 2 for 3 with three runs and two RBI as UML erupted for seven runs in the first three innings and five in the fourth en route to the win.

Ross went 2 for 3 with three RBI while junior C Stacey Lajoie (Gardner, MA) hit 2 for 3 with two runs and freshman RF Hilary Hopkins (Poway, CA) 1 for 3 with three RBI.

Sophomore P Katelyn Hebert (Lowell, MA) earned the win as she yielded two hits, two earned runs and two walks over three innings to improve to 1-3. Freshman P Kelsey Vella took the loss for Bentley as she allowed five hits, seven earned runs and three walks while striking out two over three innings to slip to 3-2.

Hitchcock led the Falcons, hitting 2 for 3 with two RBI while senior Leigh Cavanaugh also went 2 for 3.

UML took a 3-0 lead in the first as Brodie highlighted the inning with an RBI single. The River Hawks added four in the third behind RBI hits from Guanci, Tanguay and Hopkins.

Bentley pulled two runs back in the bottom of the third, but UML put the game out of reach with five runs in the fourth, highlighted by a two-run triple by Hebert.
