Softball: River Hawks, AIC Split, 3-0, 0-3
Tanguay, Farmer Lift UML in Opener, 3-0; Yellow Jackets Silence River Hawks in Nightcap, 3-0

SPRINGFIELD, MA (Mar. 30, 2008) – Senior LF Laurie Tanguay (Lowell, MA) drove in two runs and sophomore P Lindsay Farmer (Kingston, NH) hurled a two-hitter as UMass Lowell split with American International College Sunday in a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader at Groff Field.

Tanguay and sophomore 2B Katie Hebert (Lowell, MA) sparked UML in the opener, 3-0, but sophomore P Sara Swepston avenged the loss by throwing a two-hitter of her own in game two en route to a 3-0 win.

With the split, UML currently stands at 4-7 overall and 1-1 in the NE-10 while AIC is 10-7 overall and 1-1 in the Conference. UML opens at home Tuesday against Franklin Pierce (3:00).

In the opener, Tanguay batted 2 for 3 with two RBI and senior CF Stacey Lajoie (Gardner, MA) also hit 2 for 3 to lift the River Hawks while Hebert cracked a solo home run in the second inning to give UML a 1-0 lead.

Farmer allowed two walks while striking out three in a complete game to improve to 2-3. Junior P Sara Puglisi slipped to 3-2 with the loss.

Tanguay sparked a fifth-inning rally when she doubled to right field, scoring senior 1B Jachael Guanci (Everett, MA) and sophomore 3B Heather Ross (Waltham, MA) for a 3-0 cushion. Ross opened the inning with a single while Guanci drew a walk.

Junior 1B Kellie Brown and senior CF Kayla Donnelly each had hits for AIC.

In the nightcap, Swepston allowed two hits and four walks while striking out two to improve to 4-1 this season. Hebert slipped to 0-3 with the loss as she scattered eight hits, three runs (all earned) and three walks while striking out three.

The Yellow Jackets scored all three runs in the third inning when Brown doubled home sophomore 2B Michelle Franey, and reached home on an error. Junior SS Deanna Zanetti later singled home Donnelly, who had walked.

Donnelly led AIC, batting 2 for 2 with a run.

Both teams stranded seven runners as UML left three in scoring position. Ross and freshman RF Hannah May (Hardwick, MA) each had hits for UML.
