Tanguay Goes 5 for 8; Lajoie Two More HRs

LOWELL, MA (Apr. 11, 2008) – Senior LF Laurie Tanguay (Lowell, MA) batted 5 for 8 and junior CF Stacey Lajoie (Gardner, MA) hit her fifth and sixth home runs of the season as UMass Lowell salvaged a split with Adelphi Friday in a pair of non-conference softball games at River View Field.

Adelphi won the opener, 3-1, while UML held off the Panthers in the nightcap, 7-5. With the split, the River Hawks enter Sunday’s twin bill at home with Stonehill (1:00) with a 13-11 record while Adelphi is currently 25-15.

In the opener, Panther junior 3B Diana DiPiano (Oceanside, NY) batted 2 for 3 with two runs and a solo shot to left field to break a 0-0 deadlock in the fourth inning. Freshman DH Deidre White (East Islip, NY) went 1 for 3 with a two-run home run in the sixth.

Senior P Julia Schaper (Warwick, NY) earned the win to improve to 12-2 as she allowed six hits, four walks and one earned run while striking out seven. Sophomore P Lindsay Farmer (Kingston, NH) took the loss as she scattered eight hits, three earned runs and one walk while striking out two.

Tanguay hit 2 for 4 (singles) while Lajoie accounted for UML’s run, a solo shot to centerfield in the sixth inning.

In the nightcap, Tanguay batted 3 for 4 with one run and one RBI while senior 2B Julie Brodie (Chelmsford, MA) went 3 for 4 with two runs and one RBI.

Sophomore P Katie Hebert (Lowell, MA) went 2 for 2 with two RBI and one run, and also earned her fourth straight win to improve to 4-3. Hebert scattered seven hits, five runs (all earned) and two walks while striking out three over four innings.

Freshman Nicole Monroe (Townsend, MA) earned her second save of the year as she yielded one hit over the final three innings, retiring nine of 10 batters.

White took the loss for Adelphi, slipping to 2-5 on the year. White allowed six hits, four runs (all earned) and a walk while striking out one.

UML jumped out to a 6-1 lead after three innings. Senior 1B Jachael Guanci (Everett, MA) helped UML knot the score 1-1 in the first when her single scored Brodie. The River Hawks took a 4-1 lead in the second behind a two-run single by Hebert and an RBI single by Brodie.

Lajoie highlighted the third inning with a two-run shot to give UML a 6-1 cushion.

The Panthers, however, stormed back with four runs in the fourth, highlighted by a two-run single by junior 2B Kristin Brennan (Staten Island, NY) and RBI singles by junior 1B Christina O’Hara (Deer Park, NY) and Schaper.

Guanci had an RBI single in the fourth to cap the scoring, 7-5.
