BROOKVILLE, NY (May 15, 2007) – Senior pitcher Kristen Mahoney (Burlington, MA) and senior catcher Melissa Hanafin (Burlington, MA) were named to the NCAA Softball Tournament Northeast Regional All-Star Team, announced Sunday at the conclusion of the Tournament.
Mahoney and Hanafin, both four-year starters, led UMass Lowell to a late-season surge which saw it win nine of its last 12 regular season games, capture the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament and advance within a game of the NCAA Northeast Regional championship round.
The River Hawks, which finished the year with a 30-22 record (19-9 NE-10, tied for fourth), earned the No. 8 seed in the NCAAs and opened with victories over No. 1 Le Moyne (4-1), No. 5 Georgian Court (3-0) before losing to No. 2 and champion C. W. Post (2-0) and No. 6 Bryant (2-0).
C.W. Post defeated Bryant, 4-1, in the championship.
Mahoney, voted an at-large selection, enjoyed a stellar showing in the Tournament as she allowed 12 hits, five runs (three earned) and 12 walks while striking out 20 and limiting opposing hitters into a .145 average for the four games.
Mahoney maintained a 0.85 ERA over 24 and 2/3 innings and also added some timely offense with a two-run single in the victory over Georgian Court in the second round.
Hanafin led all catchers in the Tournament, hitting .300 and slugging .400 with two runs in the wins over Le Moyne and Georgian Court. She highlighted the Tournament with a 2 for 3 effort and a run in the win over Le Moyne; and a 1 for 2 showing in the win over Georgian Court.
Both Mahoney and Hanafin were named to the NE-10 Weekly Honor Roll while freshman Katie Hebert (Lowell, MA) was named the NE-10 Rookie of the Week.
Hebert batted .333 (4 for 12) and was the sole UML player to hit safely in all four games.
