LOWELL, MA (Dec. 18, 2007) – UMass Lowell senior Katelyn Campopiano (Chelmsford, MA) was named to the First Team as the All-New England Region Teams were announced by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Tuesday.

Campopiano, a defender, joined sophomore goalkeeper Jamie Gillis (North Billerica, MA) and senior Tanekar Alexander (Warwick, RI), who were named to the Second Team, and senior Jenna Tulley (Chelmsford, MA), who was cited to the Third Team.

The honors marked the second straight year Gillis and Alexander received All-New England status, after earning Second Team status in 2006. The honors are firsts for Campopiano and Tulley.

UMass Lowell posted an 11-9-1 record this season (6-8-1 in the Northeast-10 Conference/seventh place) and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the third straight year. The River Hawks suffered a 1-0 loss to Merrimack in the first round.

Both Campopiano and Gillis spearheaded a defense which ranked fifth among NE-10 teams in goals against average (1.04 per match), goals allowed (1.05) and shutouts (nine).

Both were integral players in UML matching the school record for shutouts in a season (nine) while Gillis eclipsed her own school record (eight, achieved last year) with nine this season. Last year, Campopiano and Gillis led a defense that tied the school record for fewest goals against in a season (17).

Gillis played every minute of every match this season (1,910 minutes) and allowed 1.04 goals against and halted 97 of 119 shots (.815).

As Campopiano and Gillis led the defense, Alexander and Tulley took care of the offense, combining for 11 goals and six assists. Tulley, who transferred to UML after three years at Indiana-Purdue-Fort Wayne, led the River Hawks with seven goals – including three game-winners – and two assists.

Tulley enjoyed her best matches this season with two goals in a 6-1 in over Holy Family and one goal and two assists in a 5-0 victory over American International.

Alexander added four goals and four assists this season, including UML’s goal in a 1-1 draw against NCAA finalist Franklin Pierce, as well as one goal and two assists in the win over AIC.
