Billerica’s Gillis Sets Career, Season Shutout Records
LOWELL, MA (Oct. 17, 2006) – Junior M Tanekar Alexander (Warwick, RI) scored the lone goal and freshman G Jamie Gillis (North Billerica, MA) earned her seventh shutout of the season to set a pair of school records as UMass Lowell defeated Southern Connecticut State, 1-0, Tuesday night in a Northeast-10 Conference women’s soccer clash at Cushing Field.
With the win, UML improved to 9-4-3 overall and 9-3-1 in the NE-10 and remain in a tie with Merrimack (9-3-1) for third place in the Conference. Merrimack defeated Stonehill 2-1 Tuesday night.
UML closes the regular season Saturday at home against Stonehill. Southern Connecticut slipped to 5-8-3 overall and 2-8-3 in the NE-10.
Alexander notched the goal 51 seconds before the half when senior M Jamie Lynn Cathcart (Hollis, NH) slotted a through-ball down the left flank which Alexander touched to her right and curled a shot inside the far post.
With the shutout, Gillis established both the UML season and career records, eclipsing the single season mark of six set last year by former goalkeeper Jennifer Cole, and the career mark of six shared by Cole, Heather Ross (’98) and Jaime Powers (’02).
Gillis had three saves on the night, saving the day for UML with a pair in succession in the 69th minute. Freshman M Erin Conrod (Cheshire, CT) broke free of the UML defense on the right side of the box and launched a shot which elicited a diving parry from Gillis. The rebound, however, rolled directly to the foot of senior F Monique Wallace (Suffield, CT), but Gillis recovered in time to thwart Wallace’s attempt with another diving stop.
Senior G Stephanie McGinley (Naugatuck, CT) had six saves for the Owls.
