October 29, 2006 - Goalkeeper Jamie Gillis of Billerica is only a freshman, but she already owns the University of Massachusetts at Lowell's single-season and career women's soccer record for shutouts.
Gillis set the mark in a 1-0 win over Southern Connecticut. It was her seventh blanking of the season and eclipsed the single-season record of six set last year by Jennifer Cole and the career half-dozen shutouts shared by Cole, Heather Ross in 1998, and Jaime Powers in 2002. Gillis was called upon to make just three saves, but two of them came in bang-bang fashion in the 69th minute that preserved the win and the record.
Four days later, Gillis added to her record with a 2-0 shutout of Stonehill. Freshman M. Colleen Fitzpatrick of Tewksbury had one of the goals. With the win, UMass-Lowell clinched the No. 3 seed in the Northeast-10 Conference playoffs but lost 1-0 agains St. Anslem College.
UMass Lowell will face host Franklin Pierce (17-2) Friday in the NCAA Division II Women’s Soccer Tournament Northeast Regional at Sodexho Field in Rindge, NH.
