Field Hockey: Seven River Hawks Named to NFHCA National Academic Team
River Hawks team honored for earning 3.0 team GPA

2007-08 National Academic TeamLOWELL, Mass. (Feb. 25, 2008) – Seven members of the UMass Lowell field hockey team were named to the 2007 National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division II National Academic Team, the association announced today.

Senior Jayne Vagenas (Harwich, Mass.) was named to the squad for the fourth straight season, while juniors Missy Seeley (East Hampstead, N.H.) and Sasha Lovejoy (Kennebunk, Maine) were named to the team for the third straight season.

Sophomore Molly Clay (Rockport, Mass.) was picked for the second straight year. Lizzy Ales (Arlington, Mass.), Sammy Macy (Tewksbury, Mass.) and Amy Carbon (Bellingham, Mass.) made the squad as freshmen.

Vagenas had another solid campaign posting 12 points on three goals and six assists while starting all 22 games. The senior defender and captain anchored a UML defense that allowed just 30 goals and recorded seven shutouts.

Seeley started all 22 games and totaled 20 points on five goals and a team-leading 10 assists. Lovejoy appeared in nine games for the River Hawks and earned one assist

Clay played in, and started, all 22 games during her sophomore season in the midfield for the River Hawks. Clay had 14 points on six goals and two assists.

Carbon, a freshman goalkeeper, went 1-0 with a 1.43 goals-against average. In her one start, Carbon posted a shutout in a 7-0 win at American International (10/10).

In addition to the seven individuals named to the squad, the entire team was recognized for posting a team grade point average of 3.0 or higher.

The River Hawks finished the 2007 season 19-3 and made their fourth consecutive trip to the NCAA tournament. UML captured the 2007 Northeast-10 regular season with a 15-1 regular season conference record. The River Hawks won the NE-10 tournament title for the fifth straight year.

Overall the River Hawks won 13 of their last 14 matches and allowed two goals or less in 17 of its 22 contests on the year.
