Women’s Track & Field: Barrett Captures Shot Put, Leads UMass Lowell at Tufts Stampede
Barrett Throws Season-Best 42' 9.75''

SOMERVILLE, MA (Feb. 16, 2008) – Sophomore Jacqui Barrett (Woburn, MA) won her third shot put title of the season to lead the UMass Lowell women’s track and field team at the Tufts University Stampede Saturday afternoon at the Gantcher Sports and Convocation Center.

The non-scoring meet drew athletes and colleges from all three NCAA divisions.

Barrett recorded season-best distance of 42 feet, 9.75 inches and led three River Hawks in the top five places. Freshman Bethany Staiti (Barre, MA) placed third with a toss of 39’ 1.75’’ while senior Katie Banfield (Billerica, MA) placed fifth with a throw of 36’ 2.25’’.

Sophomore Olivia Thibou (Boston, MA) enjoyed a solid day, placing second in the triple jump with a distance of 36’ 5.75’’; and sixth in the long jump with a leap of 16’ 5.25’’.

Senior Gillian Mundry (Methuen, MA) took third in the long jump (16’ 11.5’’) and also placed sixth in the triple jump (34’ 1.5’’) and seventh in the 55 meter dash (7.61 seconds). Junior Sarah Brassard (Oxford, MA) placed fifth in the triple (34’ 1.5’’) edging Mundry on fewer attempts.

Mundry was among three UML sprinters in the top eight places in the 55, as sophomore Sharikka Finley-Moise (Lexington, MA) placed sixth in 7.55 and sophomore Katrina Lutkus (Lowell, MA), a shade behind Mundry in eighth in the same time, 7.61.

Freshman Lauren Raimondi (East Longmeadow, MA) also shined in multiple events, placing third in the high jump (5’ 3.0’’) and fifth in the 55 meter hurdles (8.65), edging freshman teammate Eunice Delice (Methuen, MA), who took seventh in 9.20.

The River Hawks enter the Northeast-10 Conference Championship next Saturday at Southern Connecticut.
