Track & Field: UML Field Athletes Rule at Trinity Bantam Invitational
Young, Brodeur Lead Seven Titlists for River Hawks

HARTFORD, CT (Mar. 30, 2008) – Seniors Terry Young (Mansfield, MA) and Katie Brodeur (Lowell, MA) were among seven UMass Lowell track and field athletes who won individual championships Saturday at the Trinity College Bantam Invitational.

The non-scoring meet drew schools and athletes from all three NCAA divisions in and around the Northeast Region.

Young captured the long jump with a distance of 21 feet, 3.25 inches while Brodeur won the hammer throw with a distance of 107’ 4.0’’.

The event highlighted a busy day for Brodeur, who also placed fourth in the shot put with a throw of 37’ 5.75’’ and eighth in the javelin with a distance of 84’ 9.0’’.

Brodeur was one of three River Hawks in the top four places in the shot put, which was won by sophomore Jacqui Barrett (Woburn, MA) with a toss of 44’ 0.5’’. Freshman Bethany Staiti (Barre, MA) took third with a distance of 39’ 5.75’’.

Barrett also placed second in the discus with a throw of 98’ 4.0’’, second only to UML freshman Kate Johnston (Mansfield, MA), who won the event with a throw of 100’ 10.0’’.

In the men’s shot put, senior Rocky LeFort (Nashua, NH) and freshman Cory Murray (Methuen, MA) finished first and second. LeFort threw for a distance of 51’ 0.25’’ while Murray was right behind with a toss of 47’ 4.25’’.

Freshman Johan Rafael (Lawrence, MA) shined in two events, winning the 100 meter dash in 11.08 seconds and placing second overall (first among collegiate sprinters) in the 200 meters in 22.52 seconds.

Sophomore Sharikka Finley-Moise (Lexington, MA) led the women’s sprinters as she took first in the 100 meter dash in 13.18 seconds, improving on a second place finish in the preliminary in 13.34. Sophomore Katrina Lutkus (Lowell, MA) placed third in 13.88, also improving on her fourth-place time of 13.44 in the preliminary.

Freshman Tim Guerin (Auburn, MA) placed second in the 3,000 meter steeplechase in 9:38.91 to highlight UML’s distance runners.

In other events, freshmen Jenna Lapachinski (Turners Falls, MA) and Lauren Raimondi (East Longmeadow, MA) placed third (1:09.46) and fourth (1:10.20) in the 400 meter hurdles; sophomore Justin Oliver (Brockton, MA) fourth in the men’s 400 hurdles (1:00.74); and sophomore Taryn Murphy (New Boston, NH) fourth in the high jump (4’ 7.75’’).

The River Hawk men and women enter the Stonehill Invitational next Saturday.
