Barrett Ninth in Shot Put; Clark Meets NCAA Provision in 3,000
PHILADELPHIA (Apr. 24, 2008) – Sophomore Jacqui Barrett (Woburn, MA) placed ninth in the College Women’s Eastern Shot Put to lead the UMass Lowell women and men’s track and field teams on day one of the Penn Relays Thursday at Franklin Field.
Barrett placed second among Division II and III throwers in a field of 24, threw for a distance of 44 feet, 0.0 inches.
Freshman Lyra Clark (Nashua, NH), the sole Division II or III entry in the College Women’s 3,000 meters, placed 20th overall in 10:09.19, which ranks 25th on the NCAA Division II list and meets the NCAA Championship provisional standard.
The event marked the second time within days that Clark provisionally qualified for the NCAAs. On Saturday at Princeton’s Larry Ellis Invitational, Clark set a school record and provisionally qualified for the NCAAs in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:36.94, ranked 21st on the Division II list.
Senior Gillian Mundry (Methuen, MA) also impressed, placing 19th overall (second) in the College Women’s Eastern Long Jump with a distance of 17’ 6.75’’.
On the men’s side, freshman Tim Guerin (Auburn, MA) placed 14th overall (third) in the College Men’s 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 9:14.28. Junior Jason DeDonato (Nashua, NH) took 35th overall (10th) in the College Men’s 10,000 meters in 31:44.79.
