Track & Field: Catarius, Staiti Named NE-10 Athletes of the Week
Catarius Meets NCAA Provision in Opening Meet

LOWELL, MA (Mar. 25, 2008) – UMass Lowell sophomore Haley Catarius (Marshfield, MA) and freshman Bethany Staiti (Barre, MA) each earned athlete of the week honors from the Northeast-10 Conference Monday following their efforts at the Coastal Carolina University Shamrock Invitational last weekend.

Catarius was named the NE-10 Female Track Athlete of the Week while Staiti was named the Freshman Field Athlete of the Week.

Catarius placed second overall – tops among Division II-III athletes – in the 800 meters with a time of 2:13.93, which currently ranks third in Division II. She also ran a leg on UML’s 4X400 meter relay team which placed 11th overall (third among Division II-III foursomes) in 4:03.65.

Staiti placed 15th in the shot put and second among the Division II-III throwers behind teammate Jacqui Barrett (Woburn, MA) with a distance of 38 feet, 4.25 inches.

Catarius and Staiti led five UML athletes on the Weekly Honor Roll, including Barrett, who placed fifth overall in the shot put with a toss of 43’ 3.0’’.

Additionally, sophomore Doug Caves (Oxford, MA) placed fourth overall in the 400 meter dash and provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championship with a time of 47.08 seconds, currently third on the Division II list.

Junior Rex Radloff (Dedham, MA) was also cited to the Honor Roll as he captured the 5,000 meters in 15:01.13 and posted a 17-second lead on the remainder of the field.

Sophomore Olivia Thibou (Boston, MA), fresh off All-America honors in the triple jump at the NCAA indoor championship a week prior, placed 10th overall (first) at the Shamrock with a distance of 37’ 3.0’’. Thibou also ran a split on UML’s 4X200 meter relay team which took 10th overall (second) in 1:46.11.

Senior Rocky LeFort (Nashua, NH) also shined in the shot put as he placed fourth overall (first) with a throw of 50’ 2.75’’.

The UML men and women travel to Hartford, CT Saturday for the Trinity College Bantam Invitational.
