Early Flurries Spark River Hawks; Glenville State Next

NORTH ANDOVER, MA (Dec. 28, 2007) – Sophomore G Megan Berry (Ipswich, MA) scored 14 points and junior C Revital Carmon (Bat-Yam, Israel) added 13 as the UMass Lowell women’s basketball team defeated Goldey-Beacom College, 64-37, Friday in the Valley Cup Classic first round at Merrimack College’s Volpe Center.

The victory was the third straight for the River Hawks, who improved to 5-5. The win also extended UML’s winning streak against non-conference opponents to nine straight games entering Saturday’s clash against Glenville State (2:00).

GBC slipped to 3-5 and meets Merrimack Saturday at 4:00.

Berry converted 6 of 12 field goal attempts, including 2 of 4 from 3-point range, and also grabbed five rebounds and dished two assists. Carmon, who scored eight of her points in the second half, grabbed eight rebounds and blocked four shots, tying a tournament record.

Sophomore G Rahshala Valentine (Cincinnati, OH) also tied a tournament record with nine assists in 23 minutes.

Senior G Toni Jones led the Lightning with 10 points and 11 rebounds while freshman G Jacinda Jones added 11 points before drawing her fifth foul with 2:18 left to play.

The River Hawks posted a 37-16 lead at the break and raced out to a 26-7 lead when junior G Gretchen Rodrigues (New Bedford, MA) connected on a 3-point shot with 10:14 left in the first half. Berry scored nine of her points in the early run.

UML maintained the pressure in the second stanza as Carmon opened the half with six straight points and Berry her second trey to give UML a 46-16 cushion just over three minutes into the half.

Led by Carmon, UML dominated the paint, outscoring the Lightning 22-6. GBC had a 19-18 edge in turnovers, but it was the River Hawks who capitalized, outscoring the Lightning 22-10 on turnovers.

UML also outscored GBC 21-6 off the bench and 13-7 on second chances.
