Women’s Basketball: Stonehill Edges UMass Lowell, 80-74, in Double OT
Valentine Nets Career-High 19 Points; Double-Double for Asher

LOWELL, MA (Nov. 28, 2007) – Junior G Bethany Tighe (North Easton, MA) scored 17 points – including a pair of 3-point bombs in overtime – to lead Stonehill College over UMass Lowell, 80-74, Wednesday night in a Northeast-10 Conference women’s basketball clash at the Costello Athletic Center.

With the loss, UML slipped to 1-3 overall and 0-3 in the NE-10 entering Saturday’s game at Bryant (1:30). Stonehill improved to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the Conference and hosts Franklin Pierce Saturday (1:30).

Sophomore G Rahshala Valentine (Cincinnati, OH) scored a career-high 19 points, grabbed six rebounds and dished three assists to lead UML. Freshman G Krissy Little (Concord, NH) came off the bench to score a season-high 11 points while junior C Revital Carmon (Bat-Yam, Israel) also chipped in 11 points and grabbed six rebounds before drawing her fifth foul with 27 seconds left in regulation.

Senior F Liron Asher (Givataim, Israel) scored 10 points and grabbed a season-high 13 rebounds.

Junior C Kelsey Simonds (Middleboro, MA) scored 15 points and snatched 10 rebounds for Stonehill while senior C Meghan Driscoll (Bridgewater, MA) added 12 points and seven rebounds. Senior G Erika Stupinski (Topsham, ME) scored 10 points and dished seven assists and sophomore G Megan Methven (Corning, NY) also had 10 points.

The Skyhawks outscored UML 11-5, led by Tighe’s treys, in the second overtime to seal the win.

Stonehill came back twice to send the game into overtime. With 27 seconds left in regulation, Simonds converted a pair of free throws to knot the score at 58-58. Following a UML turnover, the Chieftains had a chance to win but Tighe’s attempt from just inside halfcourt was of the mark.

In the first overtime, UML led 68-64 with 23 seconds left to play, but Methven meshed a 3-point shot to pull the Skyhawks within one.

Sophomore G Tricia Tacey (Glastonbury, CT) converted the first of two free throws with 15 seconds left to give UML a 69-67 lead, and after a UML turnover, freshman G Kristen McWhirter (Melvin Village, NH) grabbed the rebound from a missed 3-point attempt by Tighe and converted the layup as time expired to force a second overtime.
