Women’s Basketball: Carmon’s Big Night Lifts UMass Lowell Over Southern Connecticut, 72-66
Carmon Compiles 16 Points, 20 Rebounds

NEW HAVEN, CT (Feb. 19, 2008) – Junior C Revital Carmon (Bat-Yam, Israel) scored 16 points and grabbed a career-high 20 rebounds as UMass Lowell defeated Southern Connecticut State, 72-66, Tuesday night in a Northeast-10 Conference women’s basketball tilt at the Moore Fieldhouse.

The win halted a four-game losing skid for the River Hawks, who improved to 11-13 overall and 6-13 in the Conference entering Saturday’s home clash against American International (2:00).

The win also keeps UML’s NE-10 Tournament hope alive as the River Hawks trail Southern New Hampshire (7-13 in the NE-10) for the 12th and final spot by a game. SNHU suffered a 57-56 home loss to Le Moyne Tuesday night.

The Owls slipped to 14-11 overall and 10-10 in the Conference.

Carmon converted 5 of 9 field goal attempts and 6 of 7 free throws. She also grabbed six offensive rebounds and 14 defensive, resulting in a tie for the fourth-highest rebound total in UML history.

Senior G Liron Asher (Givataim, Israel) also scored 16 points, hitting 8 of 10 field goals, and grabbed four rebounds. UML also got a lift off the bench from sophomore F Jen Valente (Prospect, CT), who chipped in 11 points and a season high nine rebounds, including seven offensive.

Senior F Kate Lynch and senior G Michelle Martinik each scored 14 points to lead the Owls. Lynch also grabbed five rebounds and dished three assists while Martinik dealt four assists.

The River Hawks outrebounded SCSU 54-27 overall and 19-14 offensively, enabling UML to outscore the Owls 16-9 off second chances. Led by Carmon and Asher, UML outscored the Owls 46-16 in the paint.

The River Hawks also shot well from the floor (.474, 27-57), including .500 in the first half (14-28), while the Owls struggled to a .313 clip (20-64), including .250 in the first half (7-28) and .361 in the second (13-36).

The advantages helped absorb 23 turnovers committed by UML (SCSU committed only six) and a 24-3 advantage on 3-point shooting by the Owls.

UML led at the break, 38-29, and stretched the lead to 50-37 with 13:22 left to play. Asher scored six of her points in the run while Carmon chipped in four points.

The Owls, however, found their touch used a 20-8 tear to pull within one (58-57) with 5:14 left to play. Martinik fueled the run with a pair of 3-point bombs while freshman G Logan Lentz scored five points.

SCSU pulled ahead 64-63 with 2:49 left to play on a layup by senior G Kaylie Schiavetta, but the River Hawks ended the game with a 12-3 run, led by a conventional 3-point play from Carmon and four free throws in the final 17 seconds from sophomore G Tricia Tacey (Glastonbury, CT).
