Women’s Basketball: Asher, River Hawks Subdue Pace, 64-46

LOWELL, MA (Jan. 12, 2008) – Senior F Liron Asher (Givataim, Israel) scored 19 points as UMass Lowell defeated Pace University, 64-46, Saturday afternoon in a Northeast-10 Conference women’s basketball clash at the Costello Athletic Center.

The victory was the second straight for the River Hawks, who improved to 8-7 overall and 3-7 in the NE-10 entering Wednesday’s home clash against Assumption (5:30). Pace slipped to 4-10 overall and 4-6 in the Conference and visits Saint Rose Wednesday (5:30).

Asher converted 5 of 8 field goal attempts and 9 of 11 shots from the free throw line. She also grabbed five rebounds and dished three assists while sophomore G Megan Berry (Ipswich, MA) added 16 points and five rebounds, hitting 4 of 9 attempts from 3-point range.

Junior C Revital Carmon (Bat-Yam, Israel) grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds in addition to seven points and five assists.

Sophomore F Taylor Losey (Bristol, CT) led the Setters with 10 points while senior F Stephanie Klingele (Staten Island, NY) added nine points.

The River Hawks enjoyed a 54-34 advantage in rebounds, including 19-8 on the offensive end, which enabled them to outscore the Setters, 14-0, on second chance points. UML also outscored Pace from the free throw line (14-5) and in the paint (26-12).

UML trailed 21-20 with 7:58 left in the half, but ended the first half with a 15-4 run to take a 35-25 cushion into the locker room. Freshman G Tamaria Menefee (Dorchester, MA) led the run with a pair of 3-point bombs while Berry added one.

The River Hawks maintained their touch in the early minutes of the second half, opening the half with a 12-5 spurt to grab a 47-30 lead with 12:23 left to play. Asher scored eight of her points in the run, and UML never let the Setters within 12 points the rest of the way.

Menefee came off the bench to contribute eight points, six rebounds and two assists in 20 minutes.
