Winning Streak Up to Four; Four Players Reach Double Digits
NORTH ANDOVER, MA (Dec. 29, 2007) – Junior C Revital Carmon (Bat-Yam, Israel) scored a career-high 19 points as the UMass Lowell women’s basketball team defeated Glenville State, 85-72, Saturday afternoon in the Valley Cup Classic second round at Merrimack College’s Volpe Center.
The victory was the fourth straight for the River Hawks, who improved to 6-5. The win sealed a 5-0 clip in non-conference games for the second straight year and extended UML’s winning streak against out-of-conference opponents to 10 games dating back to last season.
Glenville State suffered its sixth straight loss, slipping to 3-6.
Carmon converted 8 of 15 field goal attempts and also grabbed eight rebounds and dished four assists, leading three teammates in double figures.
Sophomore G Megan Berry (Ipswich, MA) added 16 points – shooting 6 for 12 from the floor and 4 for 9 from 3-point range – while junior F Antonnea Robinson (West Haven, CT) scored 13 points, hitting 6 of 7 field goals.
Sophomore G Rahshala Valentine (Cincinnati, OH) chipped in 12 points (3-4 field goal shooting, 5-5 from the free throw line) and three assists.
Sophomore G Donita Adams led the Pioneers with 24 points (8-16 FG shooting) and eight rebounds while senior F Karina Kendrick added 16 points and 14 rebounds. Junior G Mallory Menendez chipped in 15 points (5-10 FGs) and three assists.
UML shot .508 from the floor (32 for 63), marking the third time in its last four games it has shot .500 or better from the field. GSU shot .417 (25-60).
The River Hawks also forced 16 turnovers from the Pioneers while committing a season-low seven, enabling them to outscore the Pioneers 21-12 off turnovers.
Led by Carmon and Robinson, UML also outscored GSU in the paint (44-22) and of the bench (20-10) as freshman G Krissy Little (Concord, NH) added seven points and junior F Bridgette Hooker (Belmont, NH) six points and five rebounds (four offensive).
UML trailed 22-18 with 7:31 left in the first half, but ended the half with a 21-6 outburst to post a 39-28 cushion at the break. Carmon and Berry each led the spurt with six points apiece.
UML led 50-39 five minutes into the second half and used a 16-7 spurt to post its biggest lead (66-46) with 8:18 left to play. Little scored six of her points in the run while Valentine added five and Robinson four.
The River Hawks never let GSU within 13 points the rest of the way.
