Asher Nets 13 to Lead UML
WORCESTER (Jan. 2, 2008) – Senior F Megan Urban scored 14 points and grabbed five rebounds to lead Assumption College over UMass Lowell, 61-53, Wednesday night in a Northeast-10 Conference women’s basketball clash at Laska Gymnasium.
The loss halted a four-game winning streak for UML, which slipped to 6-6 overall and 1-6 in the NE-10 entering Friday night’s clash at Saint Anselm (6:00). Assumption improved to 11-3 overall and 5-2 in the Conference.
Senior F Liron Asher (Givataim, Israel) led the River Hawks with 13 points and 10 rebounds while shooting 4 for 7 from the field. Sophomore G Rahshala Valentine (Cincinnati, OH) added 11 points, hitting 4 of 8 field goal attempts.
Freshman G Molly Griffiths added 12 points for the Greyhounds while senior F Charde Floyd grabbed 13 rebounds and chipped in nine points.
The Greyhounds outscored UML 21-9 at the free throw line, offsetting UML’s 18-6 advantage from behind the 3-point arc.
UML had a 17-16 edge on turnovers, but it was Assumption which capitalized, outscoring the River Hawks, 21-11, off miscues.
Assumption led 29-26 and opened the second half with 10 straight points – six by Urban and four from Floyd – to post a 39-26 lead with 13:58 left to play.
UML answered with eight straight points, including a pair of layups from Valentine, to cut the lead to 39-34 with 11:12 remaining.
The Greyhounds led 43-37 with 6:59 to go and used a 6-2 spurt to take a 51-39 edge with 5:35 remaining. UML cut the lead to six on a 3-point shot by sophomore G Megan Berry (Ipswich, MA) with 2:20 left, but could muster no closer.
