Proceeds to Benefit Susan G. Komen For the Cure Foundation
LOWELL, MA (Feb. 12, 2008) – UMass Lowell raised more than $600 in Saturday’s “Think Pink” campaign, held in conjunction with its women’s basketball clash against Le Moyne College at the Costello Athletic Center.
The initiative was part of a global, unified effort spearheaded by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA), geared to raise breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond.
Fans attending Saturday’s game were requested to wear pink and were admitted free with a $2 donation to the Susan G. Komen For the Cure Foundation. Members of the Foundation were in attendance providing information and educational resources.
“We would definitely like to take part in the Think Pink initiative every year,” said UML Senior Associate Director of Athletics Joan Lehoullier, who oversees the athletic department’s community service efforts. “The athletes were certainly motivated for this cause. Hopefully we can grow it each year, make it bigger and better and raise more money.”
T-shirts were given to the first 50 fans in attendance, as well as the first 25 UML Women’s Basketball Camp members. The afternoon also included giveaways, raffles and a knockout tournament at halftime.
UML was one of more than 600 colleges and universities taking part in the campaign, which was sponsored by Saints Medical Center in Lowell.
